The Opportunity
The Ammonia Technician is responsible for the safe operation, maintenance, and repair of ammonia refrigeration systems within our facility. This position ensures compliance with all safety regulations and environmental standards while maintaining optimal system performance. The technician will perform preventive maintenance, troubleshoot system issues, and respond to emergency situations involving ammonia equipment.

What You'll Do

  • Monitor and operate ammonia refrigeration systems including compressors, condensers, evaporators, and associated equipment
  • Perform routine preventive maintenance on ammonia systems according to established schedules and manufacturer specifications
  • Conduct daily system inspections and maintain accurate logs of system performance, temperatures, pressures, and maintenance activities
  • Diagnose and repair mechanical and electrical problems in ammonia systems using proper safety procedures
  • Follow all safety protocols when working with anhydrous ammonia and maintain emergency response equipment
  • Ensure compliance with EPA, OSHA, PSM, and local environmental regulations
  • Replace worn or defective components including pumps, valves, piping, and control systems
  • Coordinate with external contractors for specialized repairs and system upgrades
  • Participate in emergency response procedures and leak detection protocols
  • Maintain current certifications and attend required safety training programs
  • All other duties as assigned

Requirements and Qualifications
Required:
  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • Minimum 3 years of experience working with industrial ammonia refrigeration systems
  • EPA Universal Refrigerant Handling Certification required
  • Valid driver's license required
  • Must pass pre-employment drug screening and background check
Preferred:
  • Associate degree or technical certification in refrigeration, HVAC, or related field
  • IIAR (International Institute of Ammonia Refrigeration) certification - or similar
  • OSHA 10-Hour Safety Training certification
  • Previous experience in food processing, cold storage, or similar industrial environment
  • Experience with computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS)
