Job Summary

Under administrative direction, coordinates an academic function or service for the School of Social Work which is directly related to the academic mission of the university. Responsible for ensuring that the established goals and objectives for the academic function or service are met. Uses independent judgement, and originates new concepts or approaches, policies and procedures, and directs their implementation. May supervise and evaluate, as needed, the work of others and is accountable for the work of the department.

  • Coordinates an academic support services functions for the Bachelor of Science in Social Work (BSSW), Master of Social Work (MSW) and PhD in Social Welfare programs.
  • Assists the Director in the scheduling of classes for each semester.
  • Working closely with the MSW program coordinator and responsible for the academic advising of MSW students including mapping their program of study, advising on electives and optional certificates, and assisting with issues that may arise. Proactively manages a caseload of advisees utilizing a suite of electronic advising tools in order to support students.
  • Works with the Ph.D. Coordinator regarding all doctoral students records and forms.
  • Coordinates the development, implementation, and evaluation of the student support services functions including recruitment of students. Represents the program at recruitment events.
  • Performs completion of student admission files in the graduate programs in Social Work and directs them to the relevant program director/admissions committee for review and approval. Manages graduation readiness of individual students in terms of course and field completion and other academic administrative including capstone requirements. Performs degree audits and prepares graduation certifications for students.
  • Takes the lead and is responsible for organizing student events including new student orientations, welcome events, and NASW Lead Day.
  • Responsible for meeting goals and objectives of the School.
  • Participates in the development, implementation, and interpretation of operating procedures and in particular those concerning student recruitment and marketing strategies.
  • Assists in the administration and interpretation of laws, regulations, policies, and procedures relevant to assigned area. Interprets probation and suspension policy and implements advising plan for all at-risk students.
  • Designs, develops, and conducts special studies in the assigned area of academic support services. Collects and analyzes data as appropriate and assists the Director with the annual statistics reports for the School's accrediting body (CSWE). Maintains up-to-date data on all relevant areas of duties including student admission, progress and graduation data.
  • Assists with reviewing documents including student handbooks and admission and student development policies to meet CSWE accreditation standards.
  • Responsible for liaison activities among functional areas and other departments and especially between students and the office of registration and the College OSAA.
  • Ensures compliance with FIU policies, procedures, practices and programs, and with federal, state and local legal/regulatory standards as well as with the accreditation standards for CSWE.
  • Supervises support staff, establishes goals, identifies professional development opportunities, and evaluates performance as required.
  • Interprets academic support services policies and procedures and recommends new and improved programs to effectively manage academic support services administration.
  • May supervise lower level staff.
Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree and three (3) years of appropriate experience, or Master's degree and one (1) year of appropriate experience.
Desired Qualifications

  • Master's degree in social work.
