Job Summary

The Executive Director of Development is the chief fundraising officer and a key member of the leadership team for the Chaplin School of Hospitality and Tourism Management (CSHTM). This executive will provide visionary strategic and operational leadership to build and grow a comprehensive advancement program. The Executive Director is charged with designing and executing innovative fundraising strategies to support the school's ambitious mission, vision, and campaign goals. Reporting to the Assistant Vice
President, you will develop and achieve long-range financial targets, with a significant focus on securing principal and major gifts ($500K+). As the leader of the school's development team, you will mentor staff and foster a culture of excellence and collaboration. A primary objective will be to cultivate and expand relationships with a global network of alumni, corporate partners, and philanthropists, solidifying the Chaplin School's reputation as a world leader in hospitality and tourism education.

Develops and directs the strategic plan for fund-raising, stewardship, board management and alumni relations for the CSHTM. Assesses, negotiates funding needs, develops, and communicate a case for support.

Develops, plans and implements strategies to secure philanthropic support from individuals, corporations and foundations in support of the School's campaign and fund-raising priorities. Manages all fund-raising activities as well as initiates, plans and coordinates the development of donor cultivation, proposals, solicitations and stewardship. Proactively manages a personal portfolio of up to 180 potential donors, prospects or suspects.

Develops and executes the school's portion of the University campaign. Directs all campaign fundraising and alumni activities relative to the school.

Provides professional fundraising guidance to the Dean and other academic and administrative leaders in defining external and community relations, career services, stewardship, special events, fund-raising and alumni relations priorities. Prepares and supports the Dean and other leaders in all development and alumni activities.

Meets with and personally solicits previous and potential donors on campus, nationally, internationally and throughout the community. Travels nationally and internationally to cultivate and solicit prospects. Attends meetings, gatherings or University-sponsored events. Operates a motor vehicle in the performance of these duties.

Provides leadership and proactively participates in the stewardship, oversight and collection of gifts, pledges and grants related to advancement within the assigned unit. Ensures the use of funds, including awarding of scholarship funds established by charitable donations in the school.

Serves as a key member of the University Advancement team. Participates in and adheres to university-wide prospect management guidelines for cultivation and stewardship of donors and prospects. Attends all development meetings as required. Develops and implements an annual strategic work plan and solicitation matrix that focuses on the internal and external objectives of University Advancement and the CSHTM. Ensures the cooperative participation of CSHTM Development staff in the University prospect management and tracking system, as well as with University alumni relations.

Develops and assists with the approval of fund-raising publications and publicity materials for all fund-raising programs in the school and recommends to the Dean for final approval. Utilize media channels and emerging technologies effectively to fundraise for the CSHTM.

Recruits, manages, supervises, motivates, trains, and retains experienced and competent professional and support staff in collaboration with University administrators. Implements management methods to achieve CSHTM fundraising goals, including monitoring and regular assessment of performance. Ensures that development professionals comply with University policies and standards and meet minimum performance standards as well as achieve annual established goals.

Develops and effectively administers departmental operating budget.

Works with the FIU Alumni Association, President's Council, Board of Trustees, FIU Foundation Board of Directors and other University stakeholders to promote support for the School and to develop and implement fundraising strategies in order to meet established goals and objectives.

Reports regularly to the Assistant Vice President. Produces and evaluates reports related to fundraising and development program activity and production.

Communicates effectively with the Advancement staff. Collaborates with other University Advancement team members to inspire trust, encourage creative thinking, and collaborate with other FIU staff and volunteers to significantly increase gifts to FIU.

Keeps apprised of trending hospitality and tourism industry issues and events locally, regionally, nationally and internationally. Seeks and consistently demonstrates a commitment to ongoing learning and knowledge of the School and its role, impact and influence on our global community and, conversely, the impact and influence global trends have on the School.

Displays honesty, integrity and ethics to donors at all times in the performance of duties. Must also display a high degree of confidentiality. Demonstrates professionalism in conduct, demeanor, and work habits.

May handle donated funds in the forms of checks or negotiable securities. Accesses confidential information regarding gifts and donors.

Represents the University and/or assigned unit in public functions as needed.

Performs other related duties as assigned or as directed. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree and twelve (12) years of experience with seven (7) years of experience in fundraising. Supervises/ manages subordinate staff.

Desired Qualifications

Degree in Business, Communications, Marketing, Hospitality Management, or a related field.

A minimum of seven (7) years of progressive experience in development, with a proven track record of soliciting and closing six- and seven-figure major and principal gifts.

Demonstrated experience in planning and executing comprehensive fundraising campaigns within a complex organization is strongly preferred.

Direct experience within or a deep understanding of the global hospitality and tourism industry is a significant asset.

A history of significant achievement in a broad-based development role, with documented success in leading teams and managing multifaceted programs, ideally within a higher education setting.
