ARC Student Researcher for new NSF Project: Upper Ocean Mixing and Oxygen Utilization Rates in the Changing Sargasso Sea with Development of an Improved Be-7 Sampling System

Job Summary

The Applied Research Center is currently seeking a student researcher to join their team of professionals. Duties to include:

  • General research duties to support sponsored research project deliverables as assigned (i.e. working on research/project timelines, document/report preparation, working with team)
  • Provide technical assistance for STEM research, and contributes ideas to the team
  • This project involves the design, development and construction of a novel oceanographic sampling system, development and testing of new filter material for the extraction of elements and isotopes from natural waters, with opportunities for at-sea experience deploying the instrument on scientific research cruises in waters offshore South Florida and in the Sargasso Sea, as well as the presentation and publication of project outcomes.
Minimum Qualifications

At least 3 semesters of FIU work experience or related experience outside the University with satisfactory or higher from prior student appointment.

Requires a letter of recommendation from one prior supervisor.

Requires prior completion of FIU Service Excellence training or completion within first 30 days.

Ability to work in a team setting.

Advanced proficiency of Microsoft Office Suites.

Ability to take direction and work independently as needed.

Ability to maintain confidentiality when dealing with highly sensitive information.

Knowledge of PC operations and specialized software programs, such as PantherSoft and Salesforce.

Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, verbally, and in writing.

Possess a high sense of responsibility and customer service skills.

Ability to solve problems independently.

Organizational and time-management skills.

Desired Qualifications

- Functional knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite as well as strong communications skills
- One year of relevant experience

  • Pursuing engineering degree or environmental sciences degree
    - Ideal candidate must be a self-motivated individual with strong organizational skills and must be able to prioritize multiple tasks as needed
    - Candidate must possess the ability to interact with students, faculty and staff in tactful and courteous manner
    - The successful applicant must also possess good communication skills, both verbal and written, as well as the ability to work well with other members of staff in a team-oriented environment

  • Upon decreasing credit hours or graduating, student employment must end.

Begin time: 8:30 AM - End time: 5:00 PM
