Why Join Us

At Johnson Controls, you'll be part of a global team that's shaping the future of smart buildings and sustainable infrastructure. We offer a collaborative environment, opportunities for growth, and the chance to work on cutting-edge technologies that make a real impact.

What you will do

Johnson Controls is seeking a highly experienced and innovative Electrical Engineer Architect to lead the hardware architecture definition for our next-generation Building Automation Systems (BAS) platform. This role is critical in shaping the future of our BAS product portfolio, ensuring modularity, scalability, and compliance with industry standards. The ideal candidate will bring deep expertise in embedded systems, industrial networking, and control system hardware design. This is an onsite position based in Glendale, WI. Candidates must be commuting distance, or able to relocate.

How you will do it

  • Define and lead the hardware architecture for next-generation BAS controllers and related products.

  • Architect solutions using MPU platforms such as NXP i.MX6, i.MX8, and i.MX9, and ARM-based microcontrollers.

  • Apply modular design principles using industry-standard form factors such as OSM (Open Standard Module) and SMARC (Smart Mobility ARChitecture).

  • Design and review system-level architectures including I/O subsystems, power distribution, redundancy strategies, and hot-swappable modules.

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams (firmware, mechanical, compliance, manufacturing) to ensure cohesive product development.

  • Develop and maintain hardware design documentation including block diagrams, interface definitions, and compliance matrices.

  • Ensure designs meet regulatory and compliance standards (e.g., EMC/EMI, UL, CE, FCC).

  • Provide technical leadership and mentorship to hardware design teams across global locations.

  • Support product lifecycle activities including new product introduction (NPI), sustaining engineering, and cost optimization (VA/VE).

  • Interface with suppliers and manufacturing partners to ensure design intent and quality standards are met.

What you will do

Required

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering or related field.

  • 10+ years of experience in electronic hardware design, with at least 5 years in a lead or architect role.

  • Industrial automation, or building automation systems (BAS) industry experience.

  • Proven experience with embedded MPU platforms (i.MX6, i.MX8, i.MX9) and ARM-based MCU architectures.

  • Strong knowledge of BAS networking protocols such as BACnet, Modbus, and others.

  • Experience with PLC-level architectures, including I/O design, redundancy, and hot-swappability.

  • Proficiency in schematic capture and PCB layout tools (e.g., Mentor Graphics DxDesigner, Altium, or equivalent).

  • Hands-on experience with PCB design, layout, and validation.

  • Familiarity with regulatory compliance and certification processes (EMC/EMI, UL, CE, FCC).

  • Experience with wireless communication modules including cellular, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth technologies.

Preferred

  • Knowledge of cybersecurity considerations in embedded hardware design.

  • Experience working with global engineering teams and contract manufacturers.

  • Familiarity with Agile development methodologies.
