Job Description Summary The Business Intelligence (BI) Developer I assists in the development and maintenance of BI solutions for University Advancement. This entry-level role supports the creation of reports and dashboards, and participates in data extraction, transformation, and analysis. The BI Developer I collaborates with senior team members to develop new BI reports and dashboards, fulfill data requests, and troubleshoot issues. This position contributes to strategic insights and analytics for a variety of internal stakeholders while developing a foundational understanding of BI systems, tools, and institutional data governance.

Job Description Essential Functions:
Responsible for the development and ongoing maintenance of data visualization tools, including the creation of dashboards and reports that empower data-driven decision-making across University Advancement and other Wake Forest departments. Collaborates with senior developers on data warehouse design, ETL processes, and the information framework. Applies BI best practices, data modeling concepts, and data validation methods with guidance. Utilizes database query tools, data discovery platforms, statistical and analytical software, and reporting tools (e.g., SQL, Power BI, SSRS) to extract, manipulate, analyze, and visualize data under supervision. This role supports efforts to optimize operational workflows and improve reporting efficiency by participating in the validation and testing of reports and dashboards to ensure their accuracy, consistency, and reliability. Contributes to data integrity initiatives by assisting with reconciliation procedures, audits, and error resolution. Collaborates with functional business experts to gather requirements for BI projects, assisting in the creation, modification, and documentation of functional and technical reporting specifications throughout the full project lifecycle, all under supervision. Offers comprehensive support to end-users, guiding them through report and dashboard access and interpretation. Develops the ability to bridge the gap between technical data and business understanding, making complex concepts accessible to non-technical audiences. Contributes to a mission-driven, transparent, and equity-centered organizational culture. Maintains high standards for quality and accuracy, while demonstrating a strong desire to grow professionally.
Required Education, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Bachelor's degree in computer science, Information Systems, Data Analytics, or related discipline, or an equivalent combination of education and work experience. 1-3 years of experience in a data analysis, reporting, or technical support role. Basic understanding of SQL, with the ability to write simple queries, stored procedures, etc. using TSQL. Familiarity with Microsoft SQL Server, Microsoft SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS) and SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS); Experience with Visual Studio or related IDE. Exposure to data visualization tools (e.g., Power BI, Tableau). Awareness of basic data modeling concepts and the ability to work with data schemas and relationships. Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot and resolve technical problems with guidance. Ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines with support. Strong attention to detail and commitment to data accuracy. Effective interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills, including the ability to explain technical topics to non-technical users. Good analytical and problem-solving skills. Logical thinking skills and adaptability in a dynamic environment. Ability to take initiative, work both independently and collaboratively, and contribute ideas for process improvement. Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Exposure to Advancement or CRM systems (e.g., Blackbaud CRM, Raiser's Edge, Slate, Salesforce). Experience and understanding of Microsoft SQL Server. Experience with Power BI for data exploration and dashboard development. Exposure to distributed version control systems, agile development methodologies and/or project management tools (e.g., clickup, GitHub). Interest in developing skills in cloud-based data platforms (e.g., Azure, AWS Redshift, or Snowflake).
