Position Summary |
The Pediatric Division of Genetics and Metabolism serves the children of North Carolina in the diagnosis, management, and counseling of genetic and metabolic disorders. In addition, our providers play a vital role in the State of North Carolina's Newborn Screening Program by identifying and treating disorders in newborn infants from across the state before the effects of a genetic disorder are irreversible.
The Research Assistant will assist the genetic counselors (GC) in carrying out tasks related to clinical, Newborn Screening Program, and research duties. They will primarily support the Newborn Screening Program by compiling, interpreting, and distributing all test results that are received by the Division. Clinical support will include review of scheduled referrals, calling family and provider offices to request additional records and history, benefits investigations, obtaining status updates from genetic laboratory companies, and coordination of accompanying paperwork and samples for genetic testing. They may perform additional duties as required. All responsibilities will be performed under the supervision of a licensed provider and appropriate training will be provided. Minimum Education and Experience Requirements |
Bachelor's degree; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions. |
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience |
Background knowledge in college-level genetics is required with preferred academic concentration in genetics. The chosen candidate must also have proficient computer skills. |
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience |
The ability to work both independently and as part of a team, demonstrated interest in genetic counseling, and excellent communication skills for writing and communicating with families, medical providers, and laboratories are highly recommended. |
