SEIU Maintenance Worker III (Grade 301)
Hourly rate: $41.88 (Step 76) to $54.74 (Step 99)
External candidates will start at Step 1

CURRENT ASSIGNMENT
This announcement will be used to build a pool of qualified candidates for Senior Maintenance Planner (Electrical Facilities) for vacancies that may occur within the next twelve (12) months.

Incumbents in this class are skilled in the use of materials, in the operation of high-rail vehicles and in the operation of a variety of heavy and light construction tools and equipment in the performance of various structures repair, replacement and maintenance tasks. When not operating equipment, incumbents also perform physical labor in the maintenance, repair and modification of a variety of structures. This class is distinguished from Structures Maintenance Worker in that the Structures Equipment Operator operates high-rail vehicles and on-road vehicles that require a class A driver's license to operate.

Incumbents must have the ability to obtain Class A permit within the first 60 days of employment or promotion. Must obtain Class A driver's license within the first 120 days of employment or promotion. A valid California Class A driver's license is preferred.

DEFINITION
Under general supervision, operates high rail and varied heavy construction road vehicles in support of structures maintenance and repair work; performs related work as assigned.

REPORTS TO
This position reports to a designated supervisory or managerial position.

SELECTION PROCESS

This is a SEIU Local 1021 Bargaining unit position. However, All SEIU members must follow the "Bid Form Process", failure to comply will invalidate an employee's application.

The selection process will include a screening for minimum qualifications as listed in this posting and may additionally involve a skills/performance test, written exam, and/or a panel interview.

Outside applicants will not be considered until all employees who have applied have been considered first.

Examples of Duties

  1. Operates various high-rail vehicles used to transport equipment, supplies and employees to various work sites.

  2. Operates heavy and light construction equipment including, but not limited to, trucks, cranes, bulldozers, excavators, and forklifts.

  3. Excavates trenches, installs shoring, makes slope cuts, and otherwise moves and grades earth.

  4. Operates cranes and rig loads in a safe manner.

  5. Cleans and clears debris including dead animals and other trash and obstructions from tunnels, aerials and at grade right-of-ways; cleans and rods drains; drains standing water or water seepage using hand or power pumps.

  6. Caulks or grouts cracks in walls, floors or other surfaces; repairs, removes, or replaces existing concrete, asphalt or other materials using hand or power equipment, including cutting of reinforcing steel by any means.

  7. Reads diagrams and specifications to determine appropriate measurements.

  8. Erects wooden forms and falsework or concrete work; cuts, bends, and installs reinforcing steel and miscellaneous inserts for concrete work; pours and finishes concrete for retaining walls, walkways, etc.; applies and finishes asphalt surfaces as required.

  9. Fabricates, repairs and maintains wood structures inside the right-of-way and shop yards; cleans up work site after completion of assigned work; maintains tools, vehicles and equipment in a clean and orderly condition; reports the need for additional maintenance or repair to the foreworker.

Minimum Qualifications

Education:
Possession of a high school diploma, GED or recognized equivalent.

Experience: The equivalent of four (4) years of full-time verifiable experience operating a variety of heavy construction equipment in a heavy construction or similar related setting.

Other Requirements:
Must possess and maintain a valid California Class A driver's license with a tank vehicle endorsement and have a satisfactory driving record.

Must obtain and maintain District certification to operate heavy equipment.

Must have physical capability to walk, climb, stoop, bend, crawl, twist, work in confined spaces, work underground and to heights of 60 feet, and walk on uneven surfaces; to climb and work from a ladder; perform strenuous physical labor including sufficient strength to lift various shaped material and sacks of cement weighing up to 100 pounds and must work both indoors and outdoors in all types of weather; wear a respirator and work in a dusty work environment subject to various fumes and noise levels in the proximity of live voltage; and climb into vehicles with steps up to 25 inches from the ground in close clearances.

Must be willing to work on-call, weekends and off-hours shifts


Knowledge and Skills

Knowledge of:

  • Operation characteristics and minor maintenance requirements of various heavy and light construction tools and equipment
  • Structures maintenance procedures, methods, supplies, tools and equipment
  • Proper use and care of hand and power tools and equipment
  • Excavation and shoring practices and techniques
  • Common construction details for falsework and formwork for supporting concrete
  • Layout procedures for establishing horizontal and vertical control for construction work using reference points established by others
  • Safe working practices and techniques, particularly on aerial structures or while underground or in confined spaces

Skill/ Ability in :
  • Operating specialized high-rail equipment skillfully and safely
  • Operating and transporting heavy construction equipment skillfully and safely
  • Using hand tools and power equipment to perform unskilled and skilled concrete, asphalt, wood and related structures maintenance work
  • Following oral and written directions
  • Working independently without immediate supervision
  • Working cooperatively with others in a crew
  • Reading and working from blueprints, drawings and schematics
