Duties and Responsibilities

60 to 80% of time

  • Performs various modalities of END procedures, i.e. EEG, evoked potentials, nerve conduction studies, long term monitoring or intraoperative monitoring
  • Sets up and prepares patients for EMG/Nerve Conduction testing, under the direct supervision of a neurologist. Assists physician with performing EMG related tests, including EMG, autonomic function and quantitative sensory testing.
  • Reviews patients medical records and/or questions patient to obtain a medical history in order to be alert for their symptom during the EEG, EMU, EP, Nerve Conduction/EMG, or Autonomic testing.
  • Explains procedure and listen to patient needs and concerns and addressing them with diligence.
  • Responsible for all modalities performed by the EEG, EP, EMG/Autonomic laboratories and Epilepsy Monitoring Unit.
  • Study the EEG, EMG, Autonomics, or EP waveforms during the test to detect evidence of neurological disorders, and may mark graph accordingly for interpretation by a neurologist.
  • Detects and immediately eliminates all artifacts.
  • Recognizes normal and abnormal awake and sleep patterns and seizures and writes a technical description of those patterns
  • Assists in educating patients, new technologist and medical staff in all aspects of testing.
  • Enters daily charges and maintains current billing records
  • Understands and shows proficiency in the use of hospital scheduling software

20% to 40 % of time

  • Performs at least one other modality as described above and have proficiency in that area.
  • Maintains equipment in good working order and makes minor equipment repairs as necessary and reports equipment malfunction to supervisor.
  • Attends department meetings and/or reads and responds to meeting notes.
  • Keeps inventory of supplies.
  • Maintains all necessary patient related demographics and clerical duties, including billing as needed and phone coverage and develops systems for processing information.
  • Organize information to share with others and keep available for future use.
  • Active with continuous quality improvement concept
  • Follows infection control policy and procedures, including hand washing techniques, body fluid precautions and any precautions necessary to maintain proper technique during operating room monitoring.
  • Organizes and prioritizes work on a daily basis to complete a large volume of work while keeping a day-to-day focus on primary objectives.
