Job Summary

The Controls Service Technician is responsible for the installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of building automation systems (BAS), control systems, and related components. This role ensures optimal performance of HVAC, lighting, and other facility automation systems in commercial or industrial environments. The technician works closely with clients, engineers, and project managers to deliver quality service and support.


Essential Duties

  • Diagnoses system performance through observation, testing and setup as required by trade/position.
  • Install, commission, and calibrate building automation and control systems (e.g., HVAC controls, DDC systems, PLCs).

  • Perform routine and emergency service calls to diagnose, troubleshoot, and repair control system hardware and software issues.

  • Read and interpret control drawings, wiring diagrams, sequences of operations, and technical manuals.

  • Test system functionality and document system performance.

  • Provide technical support and guidance to customers and end users.

  • Perform preventive maintenance on control systems and components.

  • Ensure compliance with local codes, safety standards, and company procedures.

  • Maintain accurate service records and complete required documentation for each job.

  • Collaborate with engineering, project, and customer teams to ensure proper integration and performance of control systems.

  • Maintain tools, equipment, and inventory in a clean and safe manner.

  • Stay current on industry technologies, products, and best practices.

  • Performs planned maintenance and inspections as indicated in the service agreement.
  • Executes service contracts, quoted projects, and service calls in alignment with directives.
  • Completes documentation of invoicing data based on hours worked and materials/equipment used to complete the service.

Minimum Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED required; Associate's degree or technical certification in HVAC, Electronics, Mechatronics, or a related field preferred.

  • 2+ years of experience in building automation or industrial control systems preferred.

  • Experience with BAS platforms such as Trane, Siemens, Johnson Controls, Honeywell, or similar systems.

  • Working knowledge of control wiring, electrical systems, and low-voltage systems.

  • Ability to read blueprints, schematics, and technical documentation.

  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.

  • Excellent customer service and communication skills.

  • Ability to work independently or as part of a team.

  • Valid driver's license and clean driving record.

  • Will require travel to customer sites within the San Antonio Metro-plex and on-call availability.
