The Piedmont Natural Gas Business Unit (NGBU) supports the energy needs of more than 1.6 million customers in Ohio, Kentucky, Tennessee, and the Carolinas.

The Senior Engineer position is a career/senior level of the Engineering classification hierarchy. Employees at this level manage work in engineering areas of specialization with minimal supervision. Incumbents are expected to develop advanced skills and to have the ability to work independently, with guidance limited to unusual or complex projects or issues. They are fully competent in the use of concepts and procedures. They identify problems, develop solutions, and take actions to implement those solutions. Senior Engineer represents a level at which career may stabilize for many years.

This role is responsible for enhancing and supporting real-time Critical Infrastructure Networks (CIN) that manage the Piedmont natural gas pipeline systems, including the main Gas Control System, SCADA front ends, Data Historians, and other related systems along with the Liquefied Natural Gas and Compressor Station assets, and the automation and control systems associated with them.

The Critical Infrastructure Networks is a mission critical to the company's operation as its primary purpose is to ensure adequate supply of gas is provided to all of our customers in a safe and compliant manner and to record, on a daily basis, gas usage by the largest industrial customers (60% of the total throughput is from these customers).

This position requires a thorough understanding of all aspects of pipeline-related systems (may include Measurement Systems, Compression and LNG automation and operations) and must be proficient in the operation and maintenance of hardware, software, and electronics as they apply to the equipment and devices that comprise the described systems. The work consists of analysis, design, coding, implementation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of these systems and their external interfaces. The incumbent is involved in all aspects of these systems from system design, project management, implementing system upgrades, establishing and maintaining standards in alliance with company and best practices in the area of administering these systems for security, disaster recovery, updates, testing, routine and preventive maintenance programs, and system support for troubleshooting and resolution on a 24-7 basis.

This position will review the impact and consequences of changes and additions to the existing systems, to ensure that all service level agreements and operational compliance requirements are met. The SCADA Network Administrator may lead and assign work to others while maintaining this critical system 24-7-365.

Dimensions:

  • Support: 325 RTU sites, 260 Pressure Recording Devices and 1300 Large Volume Meter customer locations

  • Control systems in four Liquefied Natural Gas Plants with 4BCF storage capacity, and 7 Compressor Stations comprising approximately 70,000 horsepower.

Responsibilities & Duties:

With minimal supervision, the Senior Engineer:

  • Oversee the operations of the company SCADA and LVRMR Systems along with supporting all interfaces associated with connected electronic field equipment remote workstations, company servers and the mainframe.

  • Configure SCADA and field automation equipment in accordance with company, industry and regulatory standards and/or contractual requirements while meeting customer needs.

  • Oversee the operations of the Compression and LNG HMI and Automation Control Systems along with supporting all interfaces associated with connected electronic field equipment remote workstations, company servers and the mainframe.

  • Configure HMI and field automation equipment in accordance with company, industry and regulatory standards and/or contractual requirements while meeting customer needs

  • Provide first level of engineering support for SCADA system operations including design, migration planning, database configuration, data base integrity, network and system security, disaster recovery system functionality, display building, field device protocol testing and maintenance, and GMAS support.

  • Provide data analysis, screen development, backend objects and scripts, data mapping, tag naming, tag aliasing, security, alarming, database updates, point to point checkout and documentation.

  • Produce and maintain specification documents, customer change requests, operation, and maintenance manuals.

  • Produce written documentation of work product, including design notes, module interface details, data tables, flow charts and user guides.

  • Prepare summary and detailed reports of findings and associated risk assessments.

  • Perform research and maintain knowledge of current and emerging computer security threats.

  • Provide technical support to system users - Gas Control, Field Measurement, Engineering, Gas Services, Resource Center Operations, Modeling, Compression, LNG, etc.

  • Troubleshoot and keep SCADA systems running at optimum level, maximizing systems uptime.

  • Work closely with IT Security Group to stay current on cyber security best practices.

  • Monitor system performance and participate in performance tuning activities.

  • Develops positive working relationships to effectively coordinate work activities.

  • Demonstrates effective oral and written communication skills.

  • Supports the company's goals and represents the company positively and professionally.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Basic/Required Qualifications:

  • Graduation from a four-year college or university with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program

  • State registration as a Professional Engineer.

  • Six (6) or more years of engineering experience or 5 years of engineering experience with state registration as a Professional Engineer. Experience must have been attained at a "Fully Meets" performance level.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in engineering will be considered in lieu of the B. S. engineering degree.

  • Registered Professional Engineer (PE) or passing grade on the Engineering Fundamentals (FE/EIT) exam with intention to achieve registration as a Professional Engineer.

  • Familiarity with piping and instrumentation diagrams (P&ID).

  • Mechanical and electrical troubleshooting experience.

  • Understanding of basic principles of project management.

  • Three or more years of natural gas or energy industry engineering, operations, or construction experience.

  • Knowledge of CFR 49 Part 192 - Federal Safety Standards for the Transportation of Natural Gas by Pipeline.

  • Proficient in principles of project management.

  • Comprehensive knowledge and experience with primary measurement equipment (meters, regulators, transmitters, remote terminal units, etc.)

  • Experience designing and developing systems utilizing Wonderware System Platform or Rockwell Automation PAC products.

  • Proficient in engineering theories and principles.

  • Proficient in practices of researching engineering and design issues, evaluating alternatives, making sound recommendations, and preparing and presenting recommendations.

  • Ability to deal with a variety of individuals from various socio-economic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds.

  • Good written and oral communication skills.
