From creative writing to statistics and data science, behavioral economics to social and political history, Dietrich College is home to 11 humanities and social sciences departments, programs and institutes. Our world-class faculty and students work across subject areas to investigate and solve real-world problems.

We are seeking a Research Associate. This position will support the work of the Carnegie Mellon Sports Analytics Center (CMSAC) through involvement in research, student project mentorship, and outreach. This position provides an opportunity to apply data skills in an academic environment focused on sports analytics, in collaboration with faculty, graduate students, and external partners.

Core Responsibilities Include:
  • Support undergraduate and graduate students working on sports analytics capstone projects by helping with data access, analysis guidance, and weekly meeting coordination.
  • Participate in weekly CMSAC research lab meetings and contribute to collaborative sports analytics research efforts alongside the CMSAC Director and graduate students.
  • Assist in organizing public outreach activities such as the annual Carnegie Mellon Sports Analytics Conference and help develop accessible educational workshops or virtual mentorship sessions.
  • Perform data cleaning, exploratory analysis, and visualization using R and/or Python.
  • Communicate findings clearly and effectively to technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Assist in advising undergraduate and graduate students on sports analytics capstone projects, spanning datasets from Tartan Athletics, publicly available sports data sources (e.g., NFL's Big Data Bowl), and industry partners. This will include organizing weekly meetings with students, providing guidance on methods and communication that is relevant to real-world sports data scientists.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree required; Master's degree preferred
  • 3-5 years of demonstrated experience working with data through coursework, academic projects or internships
  • Strong interest in sports analytics
  • Familiarity with a range of sports data sources and experience on sports-related projects, including work with professional sports teams.
  • Experience with Python and R
  • A combination of education and proven experience from which comparable knowledge is demonstrated may be considered.
