Job Description

PURPOSE:

The Quality Systems Engineer is responsible for developing, maintaining, and continuously improving the internal Quality Management System (QMS) to ensure compliance with aerospace industry standards (e.g., AS9100), customer-specific requirements, and internal procedures. This role acts as a key liaison during external audits and serves as a champion for quality initiatives across the plant, driving best practices in process control, documentation, auditing, and supplier management.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

Quality Systems Engineer supports quality assurance activities. Position includes but is not limited to:

  • Responsibility for the Quality Management Systems Manual and supporting documentation.
    • Ensures that the Quality Management Systems Manual and supporting documentation (APM, GQP, Training Manual, etc.) reflect the necessary customer / industry / AS9100 requirements and reflect the process and procedures actually being performed at Groton.
    • Includes the creation and revision of procedures and process flow diagrams in coordination with management and shop personnel.
  • Ensures specification compliance to industry and customer requirements.
    • Leads the preparation and coordination of external audits, including AS9100 and customer audits. Includes pre-audit documentation and conducts internal "pre-audits" to identify and resolve potential non-conformances in advance.
    • Follows up on findings and corrective actions and ensures results are communicated to customers.
  • Manages internal audit program including:
    • Develops annual internal audit schedule
    • Coordinating audits with area supervisors
  • Tracks findings and ensures timely corrective action implementation Trains and mentors internal auditors Supports special processes and ensures compliance with Nadcap requirements.
    • Includes preparation prior to Nadcap audits.
  • Leads the coordination of Nadcap audits and ensures successful resolution of findings.
  • Supplier Quality
    • Monitors supplier performance and quality trends through regular weekly reporting Maintains supplier records including certifications, audits, and surveys. Ensures flow-down of applicable requirements to all suppliers and subcontractors.
  • Training
    • Provides training for employees as applicable to ensure compliance with customer and industry requirements.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS:

  • Internal: Frequent exchanges related to quality compliance and interpretation issues
  • External: Customer, AS 9100, and Nadcap implementation issues
  • Ensure flow down of industry, customer, ISO 9000 and AS 9100 requirements.

SPECIAL SKILLS AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Requires good judgment, attention to detail, and knowledge of industry, customer, AS9100 procedures, and ability to deal professionally with internal and external customers.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with confidential data relating to quality systems management.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Knowledge of investment casting processes
  • Minimum 3-5 years of experience in Quality Engineering or Quality Systems in an aerospace or regulated manufacturing environment
  • Internal Auditor Certification (preferred)
  • Read and interpret specifications
  • Practical, technical, and theoretical training equivalent to 4 years of college
  • Proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Knowledge and experience with Root Cause Analysis and other Quality tools
