Biological Science Laboratory Technician

Culmen International is seeking a Biological Science laboratory technician to work full time for the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research (WRAIR) Experimental Therapeutics Branch (ET) at Fort Detrick, MD.

Perform daily care, feeding, and breeding of aquatic species, with a focus on zebrafish.

• Monitor aquatic environments and perform regular maintenance of water distribution and production systems.

• Conduct daily water quality assessments to ensure optimal living conditions.

• Perform routine and emergency equipment maintenance for aquatic systems.

• Maintain detailed records and adhere to SOPs, IACUC, ACURO, and AAALAC guidelines.

• Support facility compliance during inspections, audits, and recertification processes.

• Perform fish euthanasia and necropsy using approved methods.

• Design, prepare, and execute toxicological and behavioral research studies using aquatic organisms.

• Operate specialized research instrumentation such as DanioVision, EthoVision, and Tecan systems.

• Conduct advanced techniques such as microinjections, fin clipping, microscopy, and compound dosing.

• Formulate test compounds and perform dosing protocols for aquatic toxicity studies.

• Perform behavioral and toxicity testing, both independently and in collaboration with the research team.

• Collect, analyze, and interpret research data; assist in preparing reports, presentations, and publications.

• Ensure all research activities align with ethical and regulatory standards.

• Maintain laboratory cleanliness and adhere to safety regulations at all times.

• Participate in ongoing training and health screening as required by the IACUC.

• Support a culture of scientific integrity, safety, and animal welfare

• Bachelor's degree in biology, Marine Science, Animal Science, or a related field (Master's preferred).

• Experience working with aquatic model organisms in a research or laboratory setting.

• Proficiency in aquatic system maintenance and water quality analysis.

• Familiarity with laboratory animal care regulations (IACUC, AAALAC).

• Strong technical skills in behavioral testing systems, microscopy, and compound handling.

• Ability to work independently, including weekends and holidays as needed.

• Excellent organizational, communication, and data management skills.

• Prior experience with zebrafish husbandry and research.

• Certification or training in laboratory animal science or aquatic animal care.

• Experience with biomedical research and toxicology testing.
