Job Description:

Responsibilities

The Associate Program Research Specialist (APRS) will serve as a key member within the Electronic Syndromic Surveillance System (ESSS) team within the Bureau of Syndromic and Data Services (BSDS). This position will oversee the coordination and provide guidance in support of the bureau's syndromic surveillance activities. The APRS will be primarily responsible for leading the efforts to ensure quality control of syndromic surveillance data. Key responsibilities include: leading the analysis and evaluation and/or analyzing and evaluating data for syndromic surveillance; designing Oracle database tables for EMS data storage and integration; monitoring the Emergency Department (ED) HL7 data feeds and EMS DataMart data feeds, leading quality assurance processes for assessing data completeness and timeliness; working closely with hospital ED data submitters and EMS ImageTrend partners to ensure timely and accurate data submission; leading the development and maintenance of the ESSS Tableau module, including user acceptance testing (UAT), user guide updates, and user training; preparing regular reports to evaluate the performance of surveillance systems and contribute to abstracts, presentations, and other dissemination materials; writing and implementing SAS code to validate and enhance syndrome definitions and chief complaint filters used in surveillance.

Minimum Qualifications

A Bachelor's degree in Public Health, Epidemiology, Health Informatics, Biostatistics or a related field and four years of research experience in the collection and analysis of data; OR an Associate's degree in a related field and six years of such experience; OR eight years of experience. A Master's degree in a related field may substitute for one year of experience.

Preferred Qualifications

Strong analytical and technical skills. Proficiency with data systems and visualization tools. Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with both technical and non-technical audiences. Knowledge of disease coding systems such as ICD-10 and familiarity with HL7 messaging standards. Proficiency in programming and data analysis, particularly using SAS and/or SQL. Experience managing and analyzing data from large relational databases. Experience with public health program evaluation. Demonstrated strong oral and written communication skills to support effective reporting, documentation, and stakeholder engagement.

Conditions of Employment

Grant funded position. Compliance with funding requirements such as time and effort reporting, grant deliverables, and contract deliverables, is required.

Valid and unrestricted authorization to work in the U.S. is required. Visa sponsorship is not available for this position.

The selected candidate must reside within a reasonable commuting distance of the official work location specified in the job posting and must also be located in or willing to relocate to one of the following states: New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Vermont, or Massachusetts, prior to hire. Telecommuting will be available.
