Job Description

Job Title: Lead Mechanic

Position Summary:

This position is responsible for the work involved in the maintenance, and repair of heavy-duty vehicles and mobile equipment which have utility systems or special hydraulic, pneumatic, mechanical, electrical, or electronic systems, features, or controls designed for such purposes as construction, earth moving, loading, and comparable industrial or special applications. The work requires knowledge of how heavy-duty machinery, engines, parts, and systems work; ability to detect faulty items, determine causes of malfunction, and determine best repair methods; and skill to assemble, disassemble, and repair systems

A Lead Mechanic will have the skills needed to perform the work involved in the maintenance, repair, diagnostics, and operate heavy-duty vehicles and mobile equipment which have utility systems or special hydraulic, pneumatic, mechanical, electrical, or electronic systems, attachments, features, or controls designed for such purposes as construction, earth moving, logging, grinding, screening, loading, and comparable industrial or special applications.

Knowledge of how heavy-duty machinery, engines, parts, and systems work; ability to detect faulty items, determine causes of malfunction, and determine the best repair methods; and skill to assemble, disassemble, or repair components and systems.

The ability to weld and fabricate; knowledge of and ability to use a computer; ability to use and care for related tools and equipment; ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions; ability to prepare job reports, inspections, and work orders.

Identification as LEAD, adds administrative and leadership duties and role to the mechanic category. Administrative duties include personnel accountability, timekeeping, drafting and submitting reports, creating a safety culture, and enforcing company policies, procedures and contract requirements and standards.

Leadership role builds team cooperation and inspires a team environment with open communication. Sees talents in others and grooms it. The Lead Mechanic Reports to the Shop Manager. Under general supervision this position leads other mechanics and participates in the maintenance and repair on vehicles and equipment. As well as assisting the Shop Manager with duties and tasks as needed.

Qualifications / Duties:



  • Repair and maintaining a wide variety of heavy equipment, including heavy duty vehicles, construction-grade heavy equipment, automotive systems, hydraulic, and specialized equipment
  • Troubleshoot, problem-solve, detect, and resolve mechanical, electrical, and electronic issues across a wide variety of advanced, complex systems including integrated electric, air, and hydraulic systems.
  • Read job orders, observe, and listen to truck/equipment in operation to determine malfunction, and plan work procedures.
  • Disassemble machinery, heavy equipment, and diesel/gasoline engines to remove parts and make repairs
  • Diagnose, analyze, repair, adjust and align any/all components of machinery, heavy equipment, and engines to determine correct direction of repair and root cause of failure
  • Order and/or requisition parts and materials as needed
  • Maintain vehicle records by annotating all received services and repairs
  • Complete test runs on repaired machinery, heavy equipment, and engines to verify adequacy of repairs
  • Understand and perform various daily and weekly assignments from verbal or written communication
  • Keep equipment and work area clean and orderly
  • Adhere to all company safety standards/policies and applicable OSHA regulations
  • Other duties may be assigned


Qualifications:



  • 5+ years of experience repairing, and maintaining a wide variety of heavy equipment, including heavy duty vehicles, construction-grade heavy equipment, automotive systems, hydraulic, and specialized equipment.
  • Ability to troubleshoot, problem-solve, detect, and resolve mechanical, electrical, and electronic issues across a wide variety of advanced, complex systems including integrated electric, air, and hydraulic systems.
  • Ability to be responsible for the success of major repairs, and work within tight deadlines and time constraints.
  • Extremely advanced mechanical aptitude.
  • Proficiency with all tools needed to perform the duties above.
  • An active "Class A or B CDL".
  • Travel required: Flexible and able to work at different job sites as needed
  • Able to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals; to write routine reports and correspondence
  • Able to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, verbal, or diagram form
  • Team Leadership skills such as the ability to delegate tasks and set deadlines for self and others, set clear goals
  • Ability to work independently and in a team.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Valid state issued driver's license and a clean MVR
  • Hydraulic troubleshooting experience is a big plus
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Positive attitude and a willingness to learn
  • Willingness to follow any safety procedures and use safety equipment every time
  • An active Class A or B CDL
  • Basic math skills
  • Must be 18 years of age or older and able to pass a background check


Physical Demands:

This job requires frequent standing, bending, reaching, stretching, climbing, and crouching; work on top of, under, and in tight compartments of vehicles in cramped or awkward positions; strenuous work while standing, lying, or sitting. The employee must frequently lift and carry items, unassisted, weighing up to 40 pounds; lift and move heavier items with the assistance of other workers or with lifting devices such as jacks, hoists, and cranes. The employee must often push, pull, and position parts, assemblies, and equipment. The employee is sometimes required to work from ladders or work platforms at varying heights.

Work Environment:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to outside weather conditions; moving mechanical parts; high, precarious places; fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals; and vibration. We require adherence to prescribed safety practices and use of safety equipment such as protective hearing devices, hard hats, hard-toe shoes, gloves, respirators, extreme weather safety, and protective clothing. The noise level in the work environment is often loud.
