About the opportunity

SWCA Environmental Consultants is seeking a Staff Environmental/Land Use Planner to join our growing team. This is an exciting opportunity for a motivated early-career professional with a background in environmental planning or land use planning and strong interpersonal and writing skills. You'll play a key role in supporting a wide range of projects while collaborating with and learning from some of the industry's most experienced planners and environmental permitting specialists.

This is a regular, full-time position open to candidates based in or near Charlotte, North Carolina, with flexible work arrangements. Depending on location and experience, employees may work in-office, in a hybrid capacity, or fully remotely.


What you will accomplish

  • Support a range of project types, including energy transmission and generation, land use development, and public engagement initiatives.
  • Conduct research studies and prepare reports and recommendations regarding land use, zoning, population trends, social economics, site planning, and other community services needed to support entitlement applications.
  • Assist in the review and analysis of various municipal and county Comprehensive Plans and Land Development Regulation.
  • Review site/construction plans and related application materials for conformity to the Comprehensive Plans and Land Development Regulations.
  • Support preparation of municipal and county permitting applications (i.e., variances, zoning use permits, site plan applications, text amendments, and Comprehensive Plan amendments).
  • Contribute to project compliance tracking, milestone coordination, proposal development, and project support tasks.
  • Collaborate with and be mentored by senior environmental planners and permitting experts.
  • Promote and follow SWCA's safety culture by identifying and mitigating potential field and workplace hazards.

Experience and qualifications for success

Minimum qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in environmental planning, land use planning, environmental science/management, environmental policy, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 2 years of relevant professional experience in environmental planning or planning/policy work.
  • Experience writing or contributing to technical or regulatory documents with a demonstrated ability to apply logical reasoning and critical thinking.
  • Strong written, verbal, and presentation communication skills.
  • Excellent organizational and time management abilities; comfortable managing multiple priorities in a dynamic, fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to meet project deadlines under pressure and work collaboratively across multidisciplinary teams.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint) and Adobe Acrobat.
  • Possess a valid driver's license and personal vehicle to travel to office, project sites and meetings.

An employee in this Florida based position can expect an hourly pay rate of $24.91 to $31.80/hour. Actual pay within this range may depend on experience, qualifications, geographic location, client requirements where applicable, and other factors permitted by law. Regular-status employees are also eligible for performance bonuses.
