Description of Responsibilities and Duties |
The
CMS Artistic Director will:
30% Customer Service and Program Support
Maintain hours that facilitate program support to include door access, customer service at key points in the registration cycle.
Provide excellent customer service.
20% Registration and Scheduling
Plan and schedule lessons, classes, workshops, and special events.
Facilitate communication between parents, students, and instructors.
Maintain Building Access Card assignments and facilitate building access.
20% Financial/ Budget Oversight
Manage billing and payments of over $400,000 per year, ensuring accuracy of billing and on-time collection.
Coordinate with C&SP office to manage supplies and other expenses.
Implement instructor pay scale appropriate to retention and/or expertise.
Other responsibilities as required to establish and maintain a strong program.
10% Personnel Management
Recruit high-quality, highly qualified instructors.
Supervise over 35 instructors to ensure effective teaching, consistent scheduling, and accurate time entry.
Supervise office assistants and/or graduate assistants to ensure a smooth-running office.
Maintain and expand network of professional musicians in the region as advisory, teaching, or advocacy resources.
10% Designing Educational Curriculum
Design Age-appropriate private lessons and group classes utilizing progressive skill-building.
Incorporate innovative approaches and methods to meet market demands and improve learning outcomes.
Provide ample performance opportunities through recitals and community performances.
5% Community Outreach
Build partnerships with other musical entities to advance broad-based musical training.
5% Marketing
Plan and execute marketing in cooperation with the Community & Summer Programs office.
Work cooperatively with other
UNCSA community programs in marketing and resource sharing.
Maintain website and collaborate with C&SP office on social media presence.

School/Department Information |
The Community & Summer Programs office was created under the office of the Provost in October 2013. Its purpose is to generate and administer non-credit educational offerings (extension classes, workshops) in support of the
UNCSA mission. Currently four programs (Community Music School, Preparatory Dance, Acting Out, Summer Intensives) with a combined receipt-based budget of roughly $1.7 million are operated out of the C&SP office.
The Community Music School (
CMS) leverages the facilities and talent pool of
UNCSA to provide the highest quality music instruction to musicians of all ages. The
CMS offers a wide variety of courses, from group classes in piano and music theory, to beginning and advanced lessons for all ages, to certified Suzuki Method courses and more. Instructors are all experts in their fields, and most hold advanced degrees and professional teaching accreditations. Students of the
UNCSA Community Music School enjoy advantages being part of
UNCSA, such as free admission to select
UNCSA master classes and performances.

Description of Work |
The
CMS Artistic Director will develop
CMS music education curriculum to meet the needs of a population diverse in age, cultural background, and musical interests, in consultation with the Dean and School of Music faculty.

Work Schedule and Hours |
Work schedule is flexible within open hours of Community Music School: 9:00 am - 8:00 pm weekdays, 9:00 am - 3:00 pm on Saturdays. Weekend work will be required at times. The position covers 35 hours per week with a flexible schedule within the operational hours of the Community Music School: 9:00 am - 8:00 pm weekdays, 8:30 am to 1:00 pm on Saturdays. Coverage is most essential from 3:30 to 6:30 PM weekdays and 8:30 am to 12:00 PM Saturdays. Additional weekend and evening work required around recitals, recruitment events, and the start of new classes.

Required Qualifications |
Bachelor's degree and a minimum of one year of experience related to the area of assignment; or equivalent combination of training and experience. |
Preferred Qualifications |
A master's degree in music performance or music education. Minimum of three years' experience with community arts education programs, especially music arts education.
Non-profit or university management.
Experience managing budgets.
Marketing experience.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities |
Proficiency in musical performance, either instrumental or vocal.
Broad knowledge of musical instruction methods.
Broad knowledge of many musical traditions, such as classical, jazz, pop, folk, and world music.
Regional contacts with professional musicians/music instructors.
Excellent communication and customer-service skills.
Proficiency with standard office software (Microsoft Office, Excel)
