Join the Mowat Laboratory and help us research the natural aging of the brain and senses. We study companion (pet) dogs using behavioral and nonbehavioral methods. This role offers training and certification in animal care, use, and human subjects' research. Motivated individuals will find many opportunities for career advancement and intellectual involvement in the research. Tasks involved in the position include (but are not limited to):

Key Job Responsibilities:
  • Conducts research experiments according to established research protocols with moderate impact to the project(s). Collects data and monitors test results
  • Recruiting and scheduling participants for dog clinical study participation

  • Use of data management software including Microsoft excel, LabArchives and REDCap

  • Assist and complete clinical visits with client-owned dogs, including but not limited to behavioral tests, clinical examination, blood draw, ophthalmic imaging, electrophysiologic testing

  • Preparing supplies and materials for clinical visits. Managing samples from clinical visits

  • Participates in the development, interpretation, and implementation of research methodology and materials

  • Operates, cleans, and maintains organization of research equipment and research area. Tracks inventory levels and places replenishment orders

  • Provides operational guidance on day-to-day activities of unit or program staff and/or student workers

  • Reviews, analyzes, and interprets data and/or documents results for presentations and/or reporting to internal and external audiences

Compensation:

The starting salary for the position is $44,300 (but is negotiable based on experience and qualifications.

Required Qualifications:

  • Critical thinking and strong attention to detail.

  • Competence in dog handling is preferred.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Previous research experience is helpful but not essential.

  • Familiarity with digital data entry (Excel, REDCap) is preferred.

  • A long-term interest in working in a research environment is a plus.

  • Certified Veterinary Technicians are welcome to apply as the work involves client owned pets.


Education:

  • Associate's Degree required; focus on biological sciences (animal science) preferred

  • Bachelor's Degree preferred; focus on biological sciences (animal science) preferred.
