Description

This position is responsible for ensuring an efficient clinic workflow at the SIU Center for Maternal-Fetal Medicine and as such will directly supervise the nursing and medical assistant staff. The individual in this position must be able to act independently considering the daily workload and emergencies of the day as they evolve. In addition, this position will be a working supervisor.


Examples of Duties

Administration 50%
1. Directly supervise clinic nurses and certified medical assistants, including hiring, evaluation and disciplinary processes.
2. Ensure all supplies for clinics are ordered and stocked.
3. Prepare weekly/monthly clinic schedules.
4. Oversee daily duties for the staff.
5. Responsible for reviewing timesheets and approving vacation and sick leave for staff.
6. Responsible for the oversight and maintenance of clean, well-equipped and supplied exam rooms, assemble clean and sterile packs for special procedures, and maintain clean and sterile equipment.
7. Organize workflow for point of care testing at clinic visits.
8. Schedule competency training for new staff and annual training for current staff.
9. Assist with patient complaints and track in the Sensor system.
10. Organize and schedule staff meetings and educational sessions for staff, in coordination with other department leadership.
11 . As a person of authority in the clinical area, troubleshoot with patients and others, as needed. Respond to non-routine, complex questions.
12. Participate in planning, developing, implementing, updating and evaluating policies and procedures for the Maternal-Fetal Medicine sites.
13. Assess the resources available in the clinical areas and perform inventory, maintenance and utilization review of procedures to facilitate patient care.
14. Serve as clinical resource to clerical and clinical staff in performance of assigned duties. Assist with record requirements for the clinical area and implement procedures based on available resources.
15. Make site specific recommendations regarding clinic policy and procedure changes based on patient population and resources available.
16. Function as liaison between the clinic setting, the hospitals, referring physician offices and other community agencies.
17. Participate in the selection of educational materials for distribution to patients, referring physicians, etc.
18. Participate in the educational programs of Maternal-Fetal Medicine.

Clinical Activities 50%
1. Schedule patients in Maternal-Fetal Medicine sites ensuring that adequate time is allotted for procedures and physician involvement while minimizing patient waiting time.
2. Ensure pertinent records are secured from referring physicians as well as other referral information necessary for physician communication. Obtain/review laboratory and x-ray results, chart values on flow sheets or in medical records and relay accurate results to patients and physician when appropriate. Responsible for patient follow-ups and call backs. Return information to referring physicians.
3. Exercise sound medical judgment in counseling MFM patients, dealing with pharmacies, medical facilities, etc., and explaining and/or supplementing clinical information, treatment plan, surgical procedures, etc. , as presented by the attending physicians. Determine medical emergencies via information from patients and available clinical data and/or telephone conversations, discussing same with physicians or requesting immediate patient appointments for treatment
4. Demonstrate competency in performing the following tests: accu-checks, pregnancy tests, non-stress tests, urine dips, pulse oximetry and injections.
5. Retrieve patients from waiting areas, assign each to an examining room, record vital signs and prepare patients for examination. Assist attending physicians in the performance of obstetrical and gynecological examinations, pap smears, and all other MFM technical procedures, including but not limited to:
a. cell-free fetal DNA
b. amniocentesis
c. real time sonography, including transvaginal sonography
d. Mirena & Nexplanon insertion
e. NST
f. phlebotomy
6. Dispense oral medications, give injections, draw blood samples, routine urinalysis, remove sutures, replace bandages, packing, etc., all in a safe and accurate manner according to provider and pharmaceutical/laboratory directives with minimal or no discomfort to patients.
7. Obtain appropriate patient and family histories, answer patient questions regarding specific procedures, provide information and support and document the counseling session.
8. Provide proper telephone triage and information to patients.
9. Serve as resource to secretarial and clerical personnel in performance of their respective duties in coding and medical diagnosis.


Qualifications

  1. Licensure as a Registered Professional Nurse in Illinois.
  2. Three years of work experience as a Registered Professional Nurse or 2 years work experience as a Registered Professional Nurse with 1 year of supervisory experience.
