Volunteers of America-Greater New York (VOA-Greater New York) is an anti-poverty organization working to end homelessness in the New York area by 2050. We operate over 60 programs across New York City, Northern New Jersey and Westchester County including emergency, transitional and permanent housing. Our services extend to families experiencing homelessness, survivors of domestic violence, people living with HIV/AIDS, veterans, youth aging out of foster care, adults with behavioral health or substance use needs, and others in need, including a special education preschool program.

Position: Receptionist

The Receptionist serves as the first contact for all staff and visitors to the facility, providing direction and responding to inquiries. The receptionist operates the switchboard, receives and distributes mail, and performs other similar front desk operations required to maintain an effective interface with the public.

Minimum Qualifications:



  • The position requires a high school diploma and one year of related experience. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are required.


Receptionist Principal Responsibilities:



  1. Receive and assist all visitors and vendors, controlling access to all areas of the building.
  2. Provide information on specific school programs (e.g., UPK) in the building.
  3. Translates and interprets for parents as needed, makes families welcome and assists with filling out forms.
  4. Answer all telephone calls, direct calls to individual staff members/resources (e.g., social worker) within the building.
  5. Receive and distribute mail, fax materials and maintain mail receipts.
  6. Attends, as requested, parent and/or parent council meetings throughout the school year.
  7. Assist with the arrival and dismissal of school buses.
  8. Assist the administrative assistant with special projects and reports, as necessary.
