Purpose of Job

Provides leadership for the delivery of safe, effective and efficient nursing care in accordance with the Standards of Nursing Care and Practice as defined by Ridgeview Medical center, the Minnesota Nurse Practice Act and the American Nurses Association Standards of Clinical Nursing Practice. Assume 24 hour responsibility and accountability for managing all aspects of the assigned nursing unit to include personnel, budget, organization and development of the nursing unit.

Job Functions

  1. Provides leadership and oversight of the nursing unit. Supports the department director through development of programs, goals and objectives consistent with those of the organization's overall strategic plan and initiatives.
  2. Manages staff resources by overseeing the recruiting, selecting, hiring and orienting qualified individuals. Evaluates staff performance in an accurate, consistent, objective and timely manner. Develops core position hiring strategies and ensures opportunities for professional development. Creates a cohesive department committed to providing distributive, clinical and service quality to all customers.
  3. Manages operating expenses and key indicators within the budget for unit. Supports department director in quality improvement efforts and service delivery that contributes to the overall success and financial viability of nursing unit.
  4. Reviews and monitors applicable policies and procedures. As assigned, ensures compliance with local, state and federal regulatory agency standards.
  5. Maintains clinical competencies and/or knowledge in accord with scope and responsibility of the position.
  6. May participate on organizational and medical staff committees and serve as a professional resource for physicians, clinicians and leadership. May represent Ridgeview Medical Center in community outreach including participation on committees and presenting to groups.
  7. Proactively identifies and acts upon improvement projects and opportunities through observation, data analysis. engagement with partners, review of external impact factors and best practices, as well as ongoing communication with leadership and staff.
  8. Manages and coordinates the daily activities of the unit to ensure efficient and effective operations. Demonstrates adaptability and flexibility in adjusting to new and and changing priorities and work situations.
  9. Holds staff accountable for utilizing the nursing process in the provision of nursing care. Responsible for personal and professional development to ensure current knowledge and performance in the profession/position and promotion of professional growth of others.
  10. Plans, develops, monitors and maintains annual capital equipment budget for unit.
  11. Establishes, monitors and enforces standards for department risk management, safety and security in accordance with RMC safety/Risk Management Committee.
  12. Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Education/Work Experience


  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing program.
  • Registered Nurse currently licensed in Minnesota (or, if licensed in another state, a permit from the Minnesota Board of Nursing while the license application is in process)
  • Bachelor's Degree in Nursing
  • Demonstrated skills in management and supervision
  • Minimal 5 years of clinical experience

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities



  • Demonstrated ability to lead and develop team

  • Ability to meet and maintain the necessary background checks as aligned with position functions
  • Ability to communicate in the English language for effective written and verbal correspondence in order to complete job functions as mentioned above.
  • Excellent communication and influencing skills and ability to build strong working relationships at all levels.
  • Assures excellent service with a high degree of urgency to internal and external customers.
  • Systematic thinking when contemplating and implementing change.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft suite
  • Ability to communicate in the English language for effective written and verbal correspondence in order to complete job functions as mentioned above.

License/Certifications



  • CPR and other certification(s) as required by the unit/department


Preferred Qualifications



  • Previous healthcare related experience

  • Master's Degree preferred
  • Two years (full-time) of Charge or Assistant Manager experience.
