Job Overview

The Senior Manager, Colleague Advisory supports the Director, Colleague Advisory by providing leadership and guidance to a team of HR Specialists, including direct supervisory responsibility for a portion of the team. This role delivers strategic coaching and advice to Specialists and People Leaders at all levels on performance and conduct matters, with a focus on building their capabilities to manage these situations independently over time. In addition to leadership responsibilities, the Senior Manager independently investigates colleague-initiated claims, ensuring alignment with company policies, best practices, and applicable laws through effective cross-functional partnerships.

This position may be based at any Macy's, Inc. facility that meets the necessary technology requirements.

What You Will Do



  • Lead, coach, and develop a team of HR Specialist direct reports, fostering continuous learning and professional growth.
  • Provide expert advice and guidance to Specialists and People Leaders across the organization on colleague performance and conduct issues, including execution of the Performance and Conduct Management process.
  • Coach Specialists and People Leaders to determine the most effective course of action, with an emphasis on building their employee relations and decision-making capabilities.
  • Participate in the recruitment process for new Specialists, including conducting interviews, making hiring decisions, designing onboarding programs, and delivering training.
  • Serve as a case consultant for Specialists, offering guidance and escalation support as needed.
  • Oversee performance-based corrective actions, including reviewing documentation, drafting or reviewing corrective action forms, and preparing People Leaders to administer actions effectively.
  • Ensure timely and consistent follow-up on performance improvement plans and movement through the Performance and Conduct process to strengthen the overall talent pool.
  • Analyze colleague performance trends and develop proactive strategies and programs to improve outcomes across the organization.
  • Independently conduct thorough investigations and drive resolution on all colleague-initiated claims, including but not limited to: Solutions InSTORE reports, policy/integrity violations, TUWYT (Tell Us What You Think) submissions, Global Compliance matters, and letters to the CEO or Board of Directors.
  • Maintain accurate case documentation using Salesforce for all performance-related issues.
  • Influence and guide business leaders and supervisors on consistent application of company policies and conflict resolution techniques.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional stakeholders-including those with differing perspectives-while maintaining confidentiality on complex and sensitive matters. Partner with the Law Department as appropriate.
  • Act with autonomy to provide sound, consistent, and business-aligned HR advice to all levels of the organization.
  • Recommend policy updates or enhancements based on practical case experience; identify inefficiencies and propose process improvements.
  • Manage documentation and colleague files by overseeing the imaging and retention of Performance and Conduct Management records.
  • Identify root causes and trends in case activity, and partner with stakeholders to implement training, policy, or procedural changes.
  • Support system enhancements and process improvements, including Salesforce testing and feedback.
  • Manage HR Specialist phone coverage, PTO schedules, and reporting responsibilities.
  • Oversee the Colleague Advisory case queue, ensuring equitable case distribution and timely resolution.
  • Lead timely and compliant processing of performance- and conduct-related terminations, including managing all associated unemployment claim responses.
  • Foster an environment of acceptance and respect that strengthens relationships, and ensures authentic connections with colleagues, customers, and communities.
  • In addition to the essential duties mentioned above, other duties may be assigned.


Skills You Will Need

Employee Relations Expertise: Deep understanding of HR practices, performance management, and employment law, with the ability to advise on complex colleague conduct and performance issues.

Leadership and Team Development: Demonstrated experience in leading, coaching, and developing HR professionals, fostering growth through mentorship, training, and feedback.

Coaching and Influence: Skilled at coaching Specialists and People Leaders to independently manage performance and conduct situations, while influencing senior leadership through sound judgment and strategic guidance.

Investigation and Resolution: Ability to conduct thorough, impartial investigations into colleague-initiated claims and drive timely, legally compliant resolutions in alignment with company policies and values.

Analytical Thinking: Strong ability to identify patterns and root causes in colleague issues, leveraging data to create proactive solutions, influence policy, and improve processes.

Strategic and Creative Problem Solving: Ability to approach issues holistically and develop innovative, practical solutions that align with both business and employee needs.

Process and Policy Improvement: Proactive in identifying inefficiencies and recommending enhancements to improve workflows, documentation, and compliance.

Collaboration and Relationship Building: Strong interpersonal and facilitation skills with the ability to partner effectively across functional lines, including legal, compliance, and senior business leaders.

Confidentiality and Discretion: Trusted to handle highly sensitive matters with professionalism, discretion, and integrity.

Communication Skills: Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to clearly and concisely present information to diverse audiences at all organizational levels.

Technology Proficiency: Comfortable working with HR systems (e.g., Salesforce) to document, analyze, and manage case activity; able to support system testing and enhancements.

Time and Resource Management: Ability to manage competing priorities, team schedules, and queue assignments while ensuring timely and high-quality support.

Who You Are



  • Candidates with a bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience in a related field are encouraged to apply. 5+ years of HR experience that involves investigating, researching, and resolving manager and colleague issues.
  • Regularly required to sit, talk, hear; use hands/fingers to touch, handle, and feel. Occasionally required to move about the workplace and reach with hands and arms. Requires close vision.
  • Able to work a flexible schedule based on department and company needs.
