POSITION-SPECIFIC COMPETENCIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES Patient Care * Welcomes patients and get them situated in the appropriate treatment room. * Reviews patient health histories and documents all medications, medical conditions and alerts the Dentist to any abnormalities. * Obtains and documents patient's vital signs and alerts Dentist to any abnormalities. * Obtains, documents, and updates patient dental history, as well as overall health and medication history. * Takes x-rays/images and uploads into patient charts as appropriate. * Performs the setup and breakdown of all operatory equipment, instruments, and documents on time, to meet compliance requirements and to keep the Dentist on schedule with daily patient care. * Assists the Dentist during a variety of treatments, exams, procedures. * Actively delivers a positive patient experience by striving to keep patients focused on the best possible treatment. * Educate patients in oral care and ensure the sterility of instruments and operatory before subsequent patients arrive. * Is proficient in educating patients in all practice procedures, exams, and procedures. Clinical Support * Actively participates in daily morning huddles, for schedule review and ensure a smooth productive day. * Assists the Dentist during a variety of treatments, exams, procedures. * Is proficient at (1) entering all patient documentation into the Electronic Record for legal compliance, review, and Dentists' signoff (2) preparing accurate, complete, and professional treatment plans for procedures. * Prepare tables and trays for dentist with necessary instruments and supplies. * Cleans and sterilizes instruments and prepare treatment rooms as needed. * Performs in hours and third-party spore testing. * Ensures an appropriate supply of equipment and materials. * Is proficient at solely working a Dentist's schedule of surgeries, exams, and patient procedures. * Assist hygienist with patient care whenever necessary. * Enters accurate and complete treatment plans for review with the patient. * Reviews schedule and assists the Dentist accordingly to maximize efficiency and minimize downtime. * Assists Dentist in educating patients to encourage patient case acceptance. * Addresses any patient questions and/or concerns and manages patient care while under the direct care of the dental assistant. * Is proficient and professional when handing off patients to the front office staff (following exams and procedures) to ensure appropriate follow-up patient scheduling. * Maintains a smooth patient workflow with the front office staff and clinical teams to promote timely and exceptional patient experience visits. * Maintains the procedural site and anticipates chairside assisting protocols in a proficient and competent manner. Inventory Management * Monitors dental supply and equipment need, notify the Lead Dental Assistant of supply needs. * Monitor dental supply expirations and dispose of materials accordingly. * Cost mindful and stay within the department budget that is established.
Compliance * Maintains OSHA standards, aseptic technique, and HIPAA according to compliance and programs. * Abides by all PPE standards for clinical staff and practices universal precautions and proper infection control. * Assists with minimizing waste, fraud, and abuse. * Reports any hazardous situations to the appropriate staff. * Knowledgeable of spill containment and clean up. * Abides by the allowable and prohibited duties for dental assistants as outlined by the state of Wisconsin. * Assists with ensuring that Safety Data Sheet (SDS) are up to date and readily available in both electronic and paper versions. * Assists with ensuring maintenance of emergency kits and first aid supplies in the office to ensure accuracy and compliance with OSHA. * Assist with the inspection, testing and logging of autoclaves, statiums and eye wash units. * Assist with the daily/weekly/monthly monitoring of autoclaves, statiums via spore testing and other biological testing, as designated. Monthly Dental Assistant Goals * Completes the rooming process 100% of the time, establishes reason for visit, updates patient chart, i.e., vitals, medical history, program area, chaperone, tooth chart etc. * Completes clinic opening/closing procedures 100% of the time to ensure department readiness. * Works efficiently and effectively with the Dentist to guarantee daily/weekly and monthly dental visit productivity goal of 80% or greater is met consistently. * Attends department meetings/huddles 98-100% to confirm/gain knowledge of department changes, updates, and workflows. * Completes all required job specific trainings 100% of the time. * Completes other related job duties as assigned. * Comply with MHSI policies and procedures 100% of the time. POSITION REQUIREMENTS * Education: High school graduate or equivalent with additional education and completion of an approved dental assistant Program. * Experience: Experience as a dental assistant is preferred but not required. Background experience in insurance regulations, dental procedures, scheduling, sterilization, dental terminology and triaging helpful. * Expertise: Knowledge of dental terminology. Basic computer skills. Excellent people skills, empathy, and tact, when dealing with insurance companies, patients, and other health care facilities. Must be willing and able to assume the responsibilities delegated by the Dental Director and/or Dental Manager, to provide efficient and effective coordination of care. Must be willing to adapt to changing situations, schedules, and circumstances. Requires effective communication, organization, and multitasking skills. * Language: Comprehend and use basic language either written or spoken to communicate information and ideals. * Hours of Work: May vary based on Organizational need
