Job Summary
Milwaukee Public Schools seeks an exceptional Central Services Teacher - First Nations Studies (FNS) Act 31 candidate who is highly qualified and knowledgeable to join our community of teachers, learners, and leaders. The First Nations Studies (FNS) Act 31 Teacher is a non-evaluative, non-supervisory teacher position that will work at the district level to support instruction that integrates the cultures, treaty rights, and Tribal sovereignty of the Native American Nations in Wisconsin into the curriculum. This position will collaborate closely with the First Nations Studies Specialist, departmental team members, and district-level personnel to support full implementation of the Wisconsin State Statutes known as Act 31 in all public schools to promote strong outcomes for all students. The primary purpose of the First Nations Studies Act 31 Teacher is to provide and coordinate staff development services for classroom teachers. The FNS Act 31 Teacher also ensures that teachers have means, opportunity, and preparation to access resources available within MPS. This position is assigned at the district level.

Qualifications
- A minimum of five (5) years of successful teaching experience as a fully certified teacher
- A valid Wisconsin Department of Instruction teacher license
- National Board Certified or Master's Degree preferred
- Successful completion of the State of Wisconsin Act 31 Summer Institute or to be completed within the first year of working with FNS
- Successful completion of the First Nations Studies Act 31 Workshop or to be completed within the first year of working with FNS
- Minimum of two (2) years of experience with integrating First Nations Studies into the curriculum
- Experience with writing and implementing lessons and units of instruction pertinent to FNS
- Experience in providing professional development to adult learners
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Knowledge of First Nations Studies with an emphasis in the eleven Woodland Tribes of Wisconsin
- Knowledge of Woodland Tribe teachings and medicines
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English and preferably a Native language as well
- Experience with the use of technology
- Demonstrate a skillful use of technology applications and tools, including-but not limited to-Microsoft Suite, Google, Infinite Campus, and Data Warehouse
- Ability to make effective, professional presentations and trainings, and grant applications
- Ability to monitor data and generate reports
- Possess strong leadership, collaborative, and problem-solving skills
- Strong organizational and analytical skills
- Ability yo organize large amounts of information into formal presentations for a variety of audiences
- Build trust to facilitate change, plan strategically, and fulfill the department mission
- Possess significant experience in addressing the professional development needs of a range of diverse adult learners
- Support teachers with how to use district-adopted and approved resources when working with Native students
- Use effective coaching and facilitation skills, willingness to pursue advanced coaching training
- Exhibit ability to prioritize multiple tasks, balance responsibilities, and maintain a mission-oriented focus across settings
- Consistently project a positive, team-oriented disposition
Responsibilities
- Designs and presents district- and school-level professional development around First Nations Studies (FNS), Native American culture, and best practices for strengthening outcomes for Native American students.
- Assists teachers within the school setting and virtually relative to FNS.
- Creates lessons with MPS teachers relative to FNS.
- Collaborates with school staff to support the school goals.
- Collaborates with district and school-based staff to support FNS student outcomes.
- Collects and maintains data, compile statistics, keeps records, and prepares required reports relative to FNS work.
- Organizes and maintains effective communication between partnering agencies, community members, school, teachers and district staff.
- Supports teachers, educators, and other staff, K-12. Coaches them on the integration on Native American histories, cultures, treaty rights, tribal sovereignty, and contemporary happenings into the curriculum through digital and print resources.
- Provides small workshops for teachers in-person and virtually
- Attends required staff and district meetings.
- Promotes the integration of Native American cultures, histories, treaty rights, and Tribal sovereignty into the curriculum.
- Promotes the use of technology for integrating culture into the curriculum.
- Utilizes resources that currently exist in First Nations Studies.
- Evaluates print and digital resources for accuracy, authenticity, and bias.
- Identifies texts and materials to include in the FNS library.
- Seeks authentic FNS resources for the program.
- Seeks out recommended FNS experts for programming and professional development.
- Publishes ongoing Act 31 communications to staff district wide.
- Maintains accurate schedules and records; efficiently completes paperwork.
- Manages multiple initiatives, seeks clarification, and communicates regularly with supervisor(s).
- Researches and relays relevant and current information around FNS.
- Participates in district-wide events such as family engagement of FNS students
- Actively supports the MPS Strategic Plan.
- Performs and completes other duties as assigned.
Essen
Pay, Benefits, & Work Schedule
The salary range for this position starts at $52,827.70 and increases according to a set salary schedule which is based on years' of work experience as a fully licensed teacher/pupil services educator in a K-12 setting and education beyond a bachelor's degree. Salary range: $52,827.70 - 99,937.66 (191-day teacher calendar)
