Description

Executes and/or supervises all analytical and supportive procedures and practices utilized to generate quality reportable data; oversees laboratory operations, including all laboratory analysis, sample custody and control, development and enforcement of QA/QC programs, and laboratory data review and validation. An experienced bench chemistry professional whose main responsibility is to manage the operations of the designated environmental laboratory. This includes managing the workflow in the laboratory, managing supplies, and managing analysts and technicians. Responsible for ensuring all work is completed within the requirements of any applicable accreditations maintained by the laboratory, in a timely fashion. Required participant for any internal or external audits of the laboratory operations. An Organics Lab Manager may also serve as a Metals or Inorganic Laboratory Manager if appropriate with experience.

Essential Functions:



  • Supervises lab staff; provides direction and training to a team of laboratory technicians and analysts in performing in-house laboratory analyses.
  • Ensure all laboratory analyses are performed correctly according to appropriate SOPs.
  • Ensure instrumentation is running, troubleshoot issues, and make or coordinate repairs as needed.
  • Ensure all analysis is completed on the required turnaround times.
  • Ensure all analysis is performed within the specifications of the appropriate SOP.
  • Ensure reagent orders from field offices are filled in a timely manner.
  • Provide SOP updates and details for corrective actions as needed.
  • Report non-conformances to the QAM and Laboratory Technical Director.
  • Manage laboratory personnel in regard to scheduling, corrective actions, counseling.
  • Update or review updates to laboratory calculation and report templates.
  • Performs other job-related duties and projects as assigned.



Supervisor Responsibilities: Supervisor responsibilities; supervises, hires, trains, provides work direction, and problem-solving assistance for employees; oversees the daily operations of other staff.

Required Qualifications:



  • Bachelor's degree in: Chemical, Mechanical, Civil, or Environmental Engineering; Chemistry; Applied Physics
  • Minimum 6 years of experience in general chemistry laboratory, or 4 years' experience in an appropriate laboratory (air laboratory experience for air labs, water laboratory experience for water labs, metal laboratory experience for metal labs).
  • Master's Degree in an Engineering or applied science discipline can substitute for 2 years' experience.
  • Detailed knowledge of EPA Methodology - Specifically the following list as applicable:

    • EPA Method 3C, 18, 308, 316, 323, NCASI methods 9x.x
    • SW-846 8260, 8270, 8081, 8082, 8151
    • NWTPH-Gx, Dx, VPH, APH, EPH
    • ASTM D1945/46, D5504
    • TO-14/15


  • Detailed knowledge (operational, technical, and troubleshooting) of instrumentation utilized in the assigned laboratory.



Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:



  • General knowledge of chemistry and lab operations; ability to properly review data and reports for the various methods used.
  • Management skills; ability to lead a team and provide training and guidance.
  • Excellent skill level in Microsoft Office programs, including Work, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, both with internal customers and external vendors.
  • Professional behavior and appearance.
  • Ability to travel to assigned laboratories, technical conferences.
  • Ability to be organized and attention to detail.
  • Ability to prioritize and multi-task, follow up on pending issues, meet deadlines and work independently.
  • Ability to accurately read, write, and interpret laboratory documents.


Work Environment: While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in a laboratory setting.

Physical Demands:



  • The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
  • Sitting for extended periods and the use of hands to finger is common. Hearing and vision within normal ranges is helpful for normal conversations, to receive ordinary information and to prepare or inspect documents. Duties frequently involve repetitive motions and eye/hand/foot coordination.
  • While performing the duties of this job, good manual dexterity for the use of laboratory equipment is needed. The employee is occasionally required to walk, lift, carry, push, pull, climb, stoop, kneel, crouch, reach, handle, grasp, and feel. Occasional heavy lifting is expected. Exertion of up to 30 lbs. of force may occasionally be required.
  • Use of applicable Personal Protective Equipment is mandatory.



Travel: Minimal travel may be required.
