The Vice President (VP) of Construction is a visionary and results-driven executive responsible for leading the planning, design, and execution of capital construction projects across a dynamic, multi-division higher education enterprise. This role drives the successful development of new campuses, facility relocations, and the physical expansion of academic programs. Additionally, the VP ensures initiatives are delivered with operational excellence-on time, within budget, and in alignment with the institution's long-term strategic and academic objectives.

Responsibilities

Strategic Construction and Infrastructure Management
    Define and execute construction and infrastructure strategy: Support institutional growth, evolving academic programs, and exceptional student experience.
  • Oversee all phases of capital projects: Ensure scalability, space optimization, and alignment with academic and operational goals.
  • Drive financial discipline: Oversee project budgets, cost-to-build metrics, and long-term capital planning. Deliver timely, data-driven insights to support forecasting, investment decisions, and project profitability.
  • Ensure regulatory compliance: Meet accreditation, zoning, permitting, ADA, and safety standards in all construction activities.
  • Champion sustainable design: Promote innovative construction practices and operational efficiency across all projects.
High-Performance Team Leadership
  • Lead a high-performing construction team: Focus on quality and speed to market. Manage internal project teams and external partners-including architects, engineers, contractors, consultants, and regulatory agencies-to ensure seamless project delivery.
  • Establish and maintain a high-performance team: Utilize effective training, performance management, and career-development activities. Lead the team to achieve established business results and performance metrics.
  • Recognize and reward employee contributions: Acknowledge achievements to maintain motivation and engagement.
Comprehensive Project Monitoring and Collaboration
  • Develop and maintain a comprehensive project scorecard and KPI framework: Monitor vendor performance and project health across divisions. Establish a consistent rhythm of business to track and align project milestones.
  • Partner with key stakeholders: Collaborate with academic, operational, marketing, finance, IT, legal, and other departments to ensure facility readiness aligns with institutional priorities and academic planning.
  • Support and drive reliability: Integrate the HRIS with other business processes as needed. Proactively anticipate updates and remain prepared for changes in functionality.


Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in construction management architecture engineering or related field (required)
  • Minimum of 10 years of progressive leadership experience in construction or capital development (ideally within higher education or institutional sector)
  • Proven experience with space planning master planning and project financing including lease and purchase structures (required)
  • Demonstrated success leading large scale multi-site development projects for colleges universities or education providers (preferred)

SKILLS

Expertise in Construction and Higher Education Facility Standards
  • Deep knowledge of local, state, and federal construction codes: Ensure compliance with higher education facility standards.
  • Experience with hybrid learning environments: Understand space requirements for tech-enabled classrooms, labs, and student services.
  • Familiarity with accreditation-related facilities requirements: Meet standards set by national accreditors and state higher education commissions.
  • Manage construction projects: Oversee projects in urban and suburban markets across multiple states.

  • Actively assist with employee needs: Provide support and address concerns promptly.
  • Understand implications of new information: Use insights for current and future problem-solving and decision-making.
