Brief Summary of Work for this Position
The Director ensures that the Upward Bound Math and Science program is implemented effectively by monitoring its progress, addressing any challenges, and making sure it aligns with its goals. Additionally, the Director coordinates with various partners to provide services that are both cost-effective and tailored to meet the needs of the students, ensuring that the resources and support offered are efficient and beneficial.

Responsibilities include:

  • Providing overall leadership and administrative oversight for the UBMS program. This includes developing strategic plans, ensuring compliance with federal TRIO regulations, and aligning program goals with institutional and grant objectives.
  • Hiring, training, and supervising program staff, including instructors, advisors, and support personnel.
  • Facilitating professional development and ensuring staff are equipped to support low-income and first-generation college-bound students.
  • Managing the program's budget, ensuring appropriate allocation of federal funds. Responsible for grant reporting, maintaining documentation, and preparing for audits or evaluations.
  • Overseeing the design and implementation of academic enrichment activities, including STEM-focused instruction, tutoring, mentoring, and college readiness workshops. This position ensures that services meet the needs of participants and support their academic and career goals.
  • Building and maintaining partnerships with schools, colleges, community organizations, and families. These relationships help recruit eligible students and provide a supportive network for participants' success.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Master's degree required in Education, Counseling, Psychology, Social Work, or related field from an accredited institution
Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills & Experience

  • At least 3 years of experience in the areas of staff supervision; budget and fiscal management; program development and evaluation; and reporting and compliance with federal regulations.
  • At least 2 years of experience with federal TRIO programs, academic support programs, or similar programs serving students traditionally underrepresented in higher education.
  • At least 1 year of experience advising/counseling/coaching in academic planning, career planning, and college access.

Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
With a focus on college readiness, Precollege programs aim to prepare and serve students and families across North Carolina to achieve their academic potential. These programs create opportunities for students to prepare, explore, and apply to college. Through Precollege programs, students can develop academic skills, conduct research, investigate careers, build a portfolio, experience college life, and prepare for college enrollment.

The Upward Bound Math and Science program will serve New Hanover High School (New Hanover County) and North Brunswick County High School (Brunswick County) students from low-income families, high school students from families in which neither parent holds a bachelor's degree, and high school students who have a high risk for academic failure. The program includes academic tutoring, college and career exploration, community engagement activities, residential and non-residential summer programs, and other activities designed to prepare high school students for post-secondary education programs that lead to careers in the fields of math and science.
