Traffic Control & Engineering is seeking a candidate to fill the position of Assistant Transportation Specialist to perform tasks of moderate difficulty in the specialized fields of traffic control and engineering. The candidate will assist in conducting street and highway transportation studies, documenting conditions, identifying problems, and recommending improvements as needed. Responsibilities include collecting sign data for analysis on both local streets and highways, conducting detailed field investigations, and supporting inspection efforts and policy changes across the five Borough Engineering offices. The candidate will prepare Sign Information Management System (SIMS) work orders and other city-specific transportation databases to support accurate data entry and reporting. Additional duties involve participating in field surveys, traffic condition studies, and investigations, with the potential to recommend revisions to existing regulations and new traffic control measures such as signage, markings, and channelization devices. The position also requires providing direct inspection support to the team lead under the guidance of the Deputy Executive Director. The candidate should possess strong computer skills as duties may include data entry, using city specific transportation software and the preparation of relevant forms, reports, logs and correspondence. Familiarity with the SIMS program is preferred but not required. The ideal candidate should be detail oriented, accurate and a capable team player, plus have a positive attitude and possess excellent communication skills and a valid NYS Driver's License. The candidate will be asked to work collaboratively and inclusively, seeking to cultivate continued professional development and effectively communicate with all stakeholders. Minimum Qualifications 1. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university with a major in engineering, architecture, landscape architecture, urban studies, planning or mathematics or one of the physical sciences; or Preferred Skills
Familiarity with the SIMS program is preferred. Should have excellent communication skills and key knowledge of traffic engineering principles and standards 55a Program
