Job Purpose
Lab assistant is responsible for preparing chemicals, setting up/break down experiments and equipment for academic chemistry laboratories. Employee is responsible for ensuring compliance with safety regulations and chemical hygiene guidelines. in classrooms and prep spaces. Lab Assistant assesses materials after lab for quality and quantity, submitting purchase orders to Lab/Business manager as needed.
Minimum Requirements
Requires a BA or BS laboratory science degree with at least 8 hours of Organic Chemistry and successful completion of Quantitative Analysis Laboratory course work, or its equivalent in work related experience. A BS degree in chemistry from an ACS certified department is strongly recommended. Candidates with an equivalent combination of experience and/or education are encouraged to apply.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Must possess basic laboratory skills for the chemistry lab, including the ability to prepare chemical solutions to exacting standards without supervision. Must be proficient at word processing, spreadsheets, and database usage. Must possess strong organizational skills, ability to work well with others, be able to multitask, and serve the academic mission of the department, for chemical hygiene and chemical storage, and follow chemical safety regulations. Must be familiar with Safety Data Sheets. Must be able to kneel, twist, bend, and lift 40 lbs.
Additional Comments Regarding Position
Must be capable of light physical activity. Occasional nontraditional work hours (12:00pm- 8:30pm) may be required when classes are in session September-November and January-April.

Prepares complex chemicals and solutions for the academic labs, inspects equipment, and provides compressed gases and other supplies required for the operation of the academic labs. Ensures accurate preparation of solutions. Sets-up and breaks down sensitive and expensive equipment and instruments used in the teaching labs.

Evaluates needs and prepares laboratory supply lists for processing by Stockroom Manager. Regularly inspect departmental spaces and equipment for cleanliness, proper functioning and storage of chemicals and supplies. Ensures supervisor is aware of issues and follows up on unresolved items.

Ensure compliance with safety regulations and chemical hygiene guidelines and assists with keeping safety data sheet ( SDS) current for all substances in stockroom and laboratories. Maintains current copies of SDS materials for chemicals used in all laboratories in the appropriate location for access by students and faculty.

Provides supervision of student employees working in the instructional laboratories as appropriate and as allocated by the supervisor. Ensures that all student employees and research students are trained in and comply with proper chemical handling procedures, lab safety policies and equipment operations.

Assists with the annual inventory of equipment and inspection and prep of upper level labs as well as inspection and proper management of chemicals and waste in research laboratories.

Assists with tracking equipment, supplies and chemicals received and dispensed to faculty & students. Utilizes an inventory database to monitor and evaluate inventory levels, evaluate purchasing needs, and make recommendations to replenish inventory.
