Job Description

Baker College of Port Huron is looking for a Director of Campus Safety!

The Director of Campus Safety is responsible for the leadership and daily management of the Campus Safety department at an assigned Baker College campus. This role ensures a safe and secure environment by guiding safety personnel and coordinating efforts across the campus community. Key responsibilities include overseeing the investigation and documentation of criminal activity; ensuring compliance with local, state, and federal regulations-including those specific to higher education, such as the Clery Act and Title IX; and fostering effective partnerships with external first responders, internal stakeholders, students, vendors, and members of the public. The position demands a commitment to service, strong problem-solving capabilities, and the ability to engage effectively with a wide range of constituencies.

The Campus Safety Director is responsible for executing safety operations across the campus. This role involves implementing policies and procedures established by the Campus Safety leadership team and collaborating on investigations as needed. The director assists in developing and overseeing the department's operating budget, supervises the hiring, training, and performance review of safety personnel, and manages shift schedules to ensure proper coverage, including adjustments for absences. A thorough understanding of federal, state, and local regulations is essential, along with maintaining strong working relationships with local law enforcement. The director collaborates with Student and Academic Affairs on student discipline matters and ensures all safety activities are properly documented. Serving as a key resource for the campus community, the director also ensures adequate staffing for events, participates in residence hall orientations when appropriate, and stays current on legal requirements including the Clery Act, VAWA, and Title IX. Additionally, the director supports the preparation and submission of the Annual Security Report, provides records in accordance with policy and legal standards, ensures the completion of monthly tasks, and actively participates in relevant campus and system-wide committees.

The ideal candidate will hold an associate degree in Criminal Justice or a related field from an accredited four-year institution, with a bachelor's degree strongly preferred. They will have at least three years of relevant experience in law enforcement, the military, corrections, or higher education public safety, as well as a minimum of three years in a supervisory role with administrative responsibilities. Candidates must possess a valid concealed pistol license, a valid driver's license, and current certification in First Aid and CPR/AED. A solid working knowledge of Clery Act and Title IX compliance is essential, along with demonstrated proficiency in the use of firearms. The successful candidate will bring sound judgment, strong leadership skills, and a clear commitment to fostering a safe and secure campus environment.
