Georgia-Pacific has an immediate opening for an Environmental Engineer at our Naheola Operation in Pennington, Alabama. The Environmental Engineer creates long term value by ensuring risks are identified and mitigated while sustaining performance improvement and striving for environmental excellence. This is accomplished by providing environmental leadership and strategic direction for the facility through the application of Principle Based Management (PBM) and adherence to our Guiding Principles.

The Environmental engineer will be responsible for the implementation and management of the various compliance programs in the facility. The role will also help ensure that the site conforms to company policies and procedures, such as Georgia Pacific's Environmental Performance Standards.

The Environmental Engineer must be able to embrace and lead change, possess strong interpersonal skills, and efficiently balance multiple priorities. The position requires strong verbal and written communication skills and the ability to effectively communicate with a wide variety of audiences. The successful candidate must also lead, by example, be self-motivated, possess strong analytical skills, exhibit sound decision-making, and have proficient organizational skills.

Our Team

Georgia-Pacific's Naheola Mill located in Pennington, Alabama, is a manufacturing site for the company's well-known consumer products business. More than 900 employees produce a wide range of products for the consumer business, including Angel Soft bath tissue, Sparkle paper towels, as well as bleached paperboard used in Dixie paper cups and plates.

The mill is the largest employer in the community and is engaged in supporting community outreach, workforce development and education. The area is a sportsman's paradise with world-class hunting for deer, turkey and other small game and is bounded on the east by the Tombigbee River which provides such recreation as freshwater fishing, boating and water skiing. Residents of this area enjoy the mild climate, a low cost of living, and is an easy drive to the many resort communities and soft white-sand beaches of the Gulf Coast.

What You Will Do

  • Facilitate the chemical approval process for the facility including assisting operations with submittals, updating chemical approval database, and ensuring timely approvals
  • Plan and lead assessments of all environmental compliance programs to identify opportunities to improve performance.
  • Manage the requirements of various environmental programs that could include RICE MACT, LDAR (Leak Detection and Repair), Paper and Other Web Coating MACT, Stormwater, DOT, Refringent Management Program (CFC/ODS), etc.
  • Provide support for mill compliance inspections including field checks of continuous emissions monitors (CEM), ODS, chemical audits, etc.
  • Track the environmental department's Key Performance Indicators (KPI) and provide weekly/monthly reports
  • Manage the facility's environmental central file system
  • Assist with mill- wide environmental compliance standards and training program
  • Periodically rotate "on call" to provide environmental support to operations and review daily compliance status outside of regular business hours
  • Proactively maintain knowledge of current and emerging federal, state, and local Environmental regulatory requirements affecting the facility
  • Develop and maintain a strong working knowledge of mill processes and their impact on environmental performance that allows you to enable our operations teams to meet their environmental obligations

Who You Are (Basic Qualifications)

  • Bachelor's degree in chemistry, Biology, Environmental Science, or a related field (e.g., Pulp and Paper)
  • Experience leading projects, people, and/or teams

What Will Put You Ahead

  • Two (2+) years of environmental compliance experience in a manufacturing or industrial environment
  • Experience managing environmental obligations in a heavy industrial setting
  • Pulp and Paper process knowledge or manufacturing experience
  • Experience conducting facility audits or inspections to identify improvement areas
  • Experience managing industrial wastewater treatment facilities
  • Experience analyzing process or environmental data trends
