Certified Medical Assistant - Hematology Oncology Clinic

UnityPoint Health Des Moines

Shift: Full-Time Days, Monday-Friday, 36 hours/week

The Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) works with providers and nursing to help support patient care needs in the Hematology and Oncology Clinic. CMA will prepare the patient for examination, treatment, diagnostic and lab duties, patient education and minor surgical procedures. In coordination and as delegated by the provider/nurse, the CMA may complete the following tasks, but not limited to taking patient vital signs, performs dressing changes, supports registration, prior authorization, answering phones and ordering supplies on the unit.

Responsibilities
  • As delegated by the nurse, the CMA assesses patient's status through interview, observation and physical assessment of actual problems and outcomes
  • Documents appropriate information in the patient's electronic health record
  • Completes patient forms and requests medical records/correspondence to be scanned into the electronic health record.
  • Schedules referrals for patients with specialist or outpatient as requested by the provider.
  • Completes appropriate forms or requisitions needed for referrals or lab testing.
  • Assists provider/nursing with patient examination, procedures and emergencies.
  • Provides and document advice for home care of illness/condition conducting follow up phone calls regarding patient's health and progress as directed by provider.
  • Performs laboratory procedures as requested.
  • Prepares and assists provider with patient examination, specimen collection, minor surgical procedures, and treatment of the patients, including administration of medication under direct supervision of the provider/nurse as appropriate to scope and licensure.
  • Demonstrates knowledge that patient and workplace safety is a priority by preventing errors, accidents and infections and reporting potential or actual concerns immediately.
  • Thoroughly understands testing (lab and procedures) values and relationship to patient status with accountability to take next steps as directed, and as appropriate to scope and licensure.
  • Demonstrates initiative to improve quality and customer service by striving to exceed customer expectations.
  • Obtain and accurately document pre-certification or other necessary authorizations using established departmental insurance guidelines to ensure maximum financial reimbursement.
  • Ensure medical necessity has been established (for Medicare outpatients) or that the patient signs a waiver for non-covered services.
  • Completes required documentation as appropriate, including patient charting and event reports.
  • Acquires and maintains current knowledge and skills in evidence-based practice.
  • Performs select clinical duties, including but not beyond:
    • Taking vital signs
    • Topical medication administration
    • Wound care and dressing changes, compression wraps and VAC changes.
    • Assisting in the completion of patient rechecks and after visit summary paperwork.
    • Chart review
    • Patient education
  • Completes other duties as assigned by the manager/nurse.

Qualifications

Education:

Graduate of an accredited program for Medical Assistants.

Experience:

Oncology experience preferred

License(s)/Certification(s):

Current CMA certification for Certified Medical Assistant from AAMA, NCCT, AMT or NHA.

BLS and Mandatory Reporter certification.

Valid driver's license when driving any vehicle for work-related reasons

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

Writes, reads, comprehends, and speaks fluent English.

Basic computer knowledge using word processing, spreadsheet, email, and web browser.

Multicultural sensitivity.

Critical thinking skills using independent judgement in making decisions.

Other:

Use of usual and customary equipment used to perform essential functions of the position.
