Summary
The Vice President of Product Development & NYPA Ventures is responsible for developing and managing NYPA's innovative behind-the-meter products and services business lines. This role will oversee the strategic vision and tactical direction for NYPA Ventures, focusing on integrating customer strategies and driving forward non-traditional programs that provide significant state benefits. The fundamental goal is to drive the execution of New York State's nation-leading Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act, positioning NYPA as the leading clean energy service provider for distributed renewables, storage, EV infrastructure, and other future business lines.
Responsibilities
Strategic Leadership:
- Build and implement profitable products and services for NYPA's customer base in vehicle decarbonization, microgrids, asset management services, facility decarbonization, building assets, behind the meter distributed solar and wind generation and battery storage.
- Develop and execute business models for emerging products and services, partnering with R&D, Marketing, Business Development, Customer Project Delivery Implementation team, Key Account management and customers to innovate and refine offerings.
- Establish and maintain relationships with customers at the executive level, ensuring NYPA's reputation for quality and customer satisfaction.
- Interface with the NYPA Board of Trustees and the Executive Management Committee for funding approvals to drive business growth and partnerships.
Project Delivery and Asset Management:
- Define, implement, optimize, and monitor project delivery models for all NYPA Ventures P&Ls.
- Oversee the development and execution of NYPA's customer asset management plan to mitigate risks and maximize the performance and integration of NYPA/Customer owned distributed assets.
- Interface and collaborate with Strategic Ops/Asset Strategy teams to develop best practices and improve asset performance.
Regulatory and Technical Insights:
- Provide technical insights into and collaborate with the regulatory affairs team to support state and federal policy development, and tariff insights and advocacy for sustainable programs.
- Work closely with R&D to test the operational value of emerging products and services, ensuring alignment with NYPA's strategic goals.
Customer Integration and Voice of Customer:
- Develop strong marketing and branding aligned with NYPA's core service and product offerings including sunsetting of no longer viable products
- Lead customer journey mapping and analysis, the annual customer strategic plan process, the customer maturity assessment model, gap analysis, and action plans to advance maturity through cross functional engagements with NYPA business units and industry best practices.
Business Development:
- Identify and establish private and public sector strategic partnerships with NYPA in technology, services, and co-financing. Represent NYPA at key conferences and State energy leadership gatherings - ensuring NYPA is portrayed as a first mover in the industry.
- Support the commercialization and scaling of new products and services, building longer-term business lines for NYPA.

- Strong command of techno-commercial aspects of new business models and the ability to persuade customers towards innovative solutions.
- Demonstrated management experience in both large organizations and lean startups, market acceleration and customer adoption.
- Build and sustain high performing teams with an entrepreneurial mindset to risk/ rewards and execution - set good practice examples for NYPA.
- Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills for executive-level audiences.
- Ability to work cross-functionally across Finance, Operations, Regulatory Affairs, Legal, Strategy, Marketing, Business Development, and Key Account Management to deliver results.
- Mastery of discipline and broad expertise across related disciplines.
- Provides thought leadership to business challenges within NYPA area of expertise.
- Establishes and implements strategies that have a mid-term impact on NYPA's business results (typically 3 years).
- Requires ability to negotiate, compromise, and maintain relationships.
- Ability to work effectively with consultants, contractors, private sector businesses. Growth mindset in approaching challenges and obstacles that involve consideration for enterprise functions and facilities across NYPA.
Education, Experience and Certifications
- Bachelor's degree required
- Advanced degree in Engineering, a Scientific field or Business Administration preferred
- Minimum 8 years of experience in growing renewables and/or other clean energy business, either on the service or asset side.
- Minimum 8 years developing and managing successful and diverse teams.
- 5 years' experience in a leadership role, leading a functions/business unit etc.
- Experience working collaboratively with stakeholders of various interests in the energy industry.
- Experience in the electric utility industry, preferably.
- May require certifications and licensures needed to meet Energy industry, federal, state, or local regulations.
Physical Requirements
Ability to work or travel during weekend and/ or night hours is required Approximately 25% travel primarily within NY State. The salary offered will be determined based on the successful candidates' relevant experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities.
