Internal Structures (FWD) Engineers are responsible for detail design, analysis and requirements of all internal structures for the COLUMBIA Class submarine, the nation's #1 defense program. Submarine internal structures includes equipment foundations, platform decks, modular structures, joinerwork, bulkheads, tank structures and structural penetrations. Responsibilities include:

Working with designers and draftsmen to design, analyze and produce technical disclosures for use in submarine construction. It is the engineer's responsibility to ensure all technical requirements are met and represented on the technical disclosure.
Performing engineering calculations which may include shock loading analysis, operational and live loading analysis, stiffness analysis, fatigue evaluation and tank pressurization analysis. Both computer aided models (Finite Element Analysis) as well as conventional hand calculation methods are utilized.

Supporting shipyard construction representatives to resolve schedule critical construction issues. This includes on site interface at shipyard locations.

Working in team environments consisting of designers, construction reps, system engineers, submarine sustainment reps and Navy personnel to develop designs that take into account preferred prefabrications and construction techniques to minimize costs and improve schedules while meeting all requirements.

Engineers take full ownership of their assigned work. This requires a complete understanding of supplier inputs, downstream stakeholder needs, construction build plans, contractual requirements, corporate procedural requirements, project goals and project schedules in order to ensure our products are designed, built and maintained to the highest degree of quality. To accomplish this, engineers must be both technical leaders and project leaders
