At St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, we are pioneering interdisciplinary approaches to accelerate biomedical and clinical discoveries. The Hillman Lab, within the new Department of Imaging Sciences develops new in-vivo imaging and microscopy technologies and applies them to investigate how the structure and function of complex tissues, particularly the brain, are affected by disease. We are seeking a Researcher - Imaging Sciences to contribute to the development of high-speed light-sheet microscopes for biomedical and clinical applications.

The Researcher - Imaging Sciences will contribute to the development, design, construction, documentation and use of light-sheet based high-speed microscopes. Prior knowledge of optics and optical design is strongly desired, including hands-on experience assembling and aligning optical systems. An interest in imaging, image analysis and biomedical applications will be a major advantage in developing and testing applications of the assembled systems. The researcher will be highly collaborative and able to work with local and inter-institutional collaborators to debug issues such as data and sample transfers. The researcher will be expected to maintain excellent communication, working with supervisors and collaborators to plan work, meet deadlines, keep careful records of all work, regularly report on progress to colleagues and collaborators, contribute to meetings, presentations, abstracts and publications related to the work performed. Additional responsibilities assisting with other imaging hardware, optical design and analysis projects are expected and could build towards independent research projects. The role includes the opportunity for training and learning across broad areas of optics, computation, biology and medicine.

Job Responsibilities:

  • With guidance and training, develops optical designs for imaging systems using modelling methods and optical design principles.
  • Researches and sources appropriate parts and assists with ordering of components for systems.
  • Manages inventory of optical components and assembles systems according to designs.
  • Performs and documents alignment protocols. Regularly performs and records validation and standardization metrics.
  • Develops, optimizes and documents system software.
  • Utilizes and assists others to use assembled systems.
  • Oversees data collection and provides support for data transfer and analysis.
  • Accurately records all experimental procedures and maintains databases.
  • May draft results/data for posters, presentations or publications.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned to meet the goals of the department and institution.

Minimum Education:

  • Bachelor's degree in relevant scientific area is required

Compensation

In recognition of certain U.S. state and municipal pay transparency laws, St. Jude is including a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role. This is an estimate offered in good faith and a specific salary offer takes into account factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to skill sets, experience and training, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be hired at or near the top of the salary range and compensation decisions are dependent on the facts and circumstances of each case. A reasonable estimate of the current salary range is $24.00 - $42.00 per hour for the role of Researcher.
