Job Overview: WIRED is looking for a Director of Photography to lead the evolution of our visual identity across WIRED.com, digital platforms, print, and beyond.. You'll drive our photography strategy with a digital-first mindset, crafting visuals that captivate in today's fast-paced, screen-centric world, while staying true to WIRED's bold legacy. You'll manage a team across three time zones, ensuring seamless collaboration and communication. From directing high-impact photo shoots for feature stories to producing real-time visuals for breaking news, you'll be at the forefront of how WIRED's visual identity evolves in response to fast-paced editorial demands. You will collaborate closely with editors, writers, and art directors to bring ambitious visual narratives to life, ensuring every project aligns with WIRED's editorial vision. Your leadership will extend to commissioning fresh, diverse talent to ensure our visual content reflects a wide range of global perspectives and speaks to our tech-savvy, forward-thinking audience. Location: New York or San Francisco Key Responsibilities:
Lead WIRED's photography department, setting a strong editorial vision across digital, print, and social platforms. Oversee photo planning, production, budgeting, licensing, and editing for print and digital stories. Commission and direct original photography-from cover shoots and features to news stories and social content. Develop relationships with a diverse roster of photographers and visual artists globally. Collaborate with editorial, design, and video teams to ensure cohesive cross-platform visuals. Exhibit strong teamwork and communication skills, especially in high-pressure, fast-paced editorial environments. Adapt quickly to breaking news and shifting editorial priorities, providing creative and efficient visual solutions and feedback in real time. Maintain and evolve WIRED's visual identity, pushing creative boundaries and setting new trends. Manage, mentor, and inspire a team of photo editors and contributors, fostering a collaborative, inclusive, and high-performance culture.
Qualifications:
7+ years of experience in editorial photography, with at least 3 years in a senior or leadership role. A strong visual portfolio showcasing creative direction and commissioning experience across multiple formats. Deep knowledge of the photography landscape, with a strong network of photographers and creative collaborators. Proven ability to lead visual storytelling across digital platforms, with a deep understanding of what works for mobile, social, and emerging media. Excellent communication and organizational skills-you thrive in fast-paced, deadline-driven environments. A strong track record of management; you're capable of scouting and hiring top talent, and bringing out the best in your team with consistent feedback and actionable guidance. Strong knowledge of copyright law, fair use restrictions, rights management, and ethical standards in journalism. Proficiency with CMS tools, Adobe Creative Suite, and digital asset management systems. A genuine passion for WIRED's universe-technology, science, design, innovation, and the intersection of all those forces with culture.
The expected base salary range for this position is from $155,000-$175,000. Salary offers are based on a wide range of factors including but not limited to relevant skills, training, experience, and education.
