GAI Consultants, Inc. is seeking a motivated Civil or Structural Engineer-in-Training to provide project support for power generation construction. The position is based out of our Pittsburgh, PA office and will predominantly work in the PA, WV and OH regions at various power generation client project sites. Initial project support is for structural repair inspection of a cooling tower located within a power generation facility in Moundsville, WV.

Essential Duties Include:



  • Perform routine inspections, checks, tests, and sampling procedures for power generation construction inspection.
  • Applicants must be willing to travel to the regions serviced, with infrequent project support at sites further away. Lodging (hotel) will be provided. This position is primarily field-oriented and location will vary by project support requirements.
  • Inspection areas include foundation inspection, structural repair inspection, concrete placement inspection, and quality control testing.
  • Perform concrete and cementitious mortar field testing, with the possibility of further training to assist with laboratory compressive strength testing.
  • Follow quality control requirements and well-defined criteria using inspection tools and devices. Perform audits to ensure standards of quality are maintained.
  • Accurately document the results of the inspections, testing, and quality control checks.
  • Coordinate calibration of test equipment, tools, and devices.
  • Assist in the writing and updating of inspection procedures, protocols, and checklists.
  • Interpret prints, drawings, and schematics.
  • Interpret project specifications and be familiar with schedule and frequency of required samples and tests.
  • Applicants must be able to perform inspection and testing duties at elevated work sites. Initial project support is located on scaffolding platforms up to 300 feet above ground. Access is by personnel lift and/or crane basket. Some climbing of ladders may be required.
  • American Concrete Institute (ACI) Concrete Testing Technician - Grade 1 certification is required for initial project support. Certification may be scheduled at time of hiring. Additional ACI certifications preferred include Shotcrete Inspector and Compressive Strength Testing Technician - Grade 1.
  • Proof of required certifications will need to be provided once obtained


Travel Requirements:



  • 80% - Travel for construction projects within Pennsylvania, West Virigina, and Ohio

Minimum Years of Experience

Education



  • B.S. or M.S. Engineering


Certification/Licensure



  • Passed Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam and obtained engineer-in-training (EIT) or engineering-intern (EI) certification.


Technical Responsibilities



  • Collects data and gathers information or documents.
  • Participates in laboratory testing and field investigations.
  • Performs basic computations or analysis.
  • Assists with preparation of engineering deliverables.
  • Observes construction activities.


Project and Task Management



  • Responsible for personal task management and adherence to deadlines and scope.
  • No managerial responsibilities at this level.


Management Responsibility



  • Receives close supervision on all aspects of assignments.
  • Receives mentorship from a licensed engineer.


Communication Skills



  • Possesses basic oral and written communication skills. Identifies and acknowledges principles of teamwork and leadership.
  • Interacts primarily with internal project team members.
