Position Description
This position is responsible for performing chemical, microscopic, serologic, hematologic, immunohematologic, parasitic and bacteriologic tests to provide data for use in treatment and diagnosis of disease. Persons in this position provide support to clinical laboratories. Work is performed under general supervision, within established methods and procedures. Work is performed under general supervision. Much of the work is standardized, although the work is governed generally by broad instructions or objectives. Employees in this class generally have no delegated supervisory responsibilities; may instruct or train other personnel in specific techniques, etc. Employees in this class may be exposed to infectious materials (feces, body fluid, etc.); must work with automated machinery and/or equipment which require caution for safety.

Major/Essential Functions
  • Performs chemical, microscopic, serologic, hematologic, and bacteriologic tests.
  • Ensures instrument maintenance procedures are performed and instruments are running properly. Assists in troubleshooting and arranges for on-site service when needed.
  • Performs instrument calibration and quality control, following SHS Clinic procedures
  • Participates in employee competence and training activities.
  • Complies with Joint Commission regulations and assists in Joint Commission inspection readiness.
  • Performs Proficiency Testing following SHS Clinic policies and procedures.
  • Participates in employee competence and training activities.
  • Collects and processes patient samples following SHS Clinic procedures. Ensures proper specimen processing and storage of specimens sent to reference laboratories.
  • Follows all safety procedures and guidelines for patients and employees.
  • Incorporates a Values-based philosophy into the workplace environment using the values set forth by the Texas Tech Health Sciences Center.


Required Qualifications
Education: A minimum of a Bachelor's degree in the biological, natural or physical sciences. License/Certification: Registered as a Medical Technologist (MT) ASCP. Experience: No previous work experience.
