Visual & Performing Arts Division
One of nine academic divisions, the Visual and Performing Arts serves the educational needs of OCC's diverse local and global community by offering high-quality instruction that leads to academic degrees, college transfers, certificates in career education, basic skills, and workforce development to enable lifelong learning. We are committed to building a supportive, participatory, respectful, and equitable environment for students, employees, and the community. The division has complex operations in seven academic departments, such as Art, Dance, Digital Media and Design, Film and Television, Music, Photography, and Theatre Arts, as well as extensive programming in specialized art facilities - Robert B Moore Theatre, Drama Lab, and Frank M. Doyle Arts Pavilion. As the largest performance space at Orange Coast College, the Robert B. Moore Theatre hosts a wide array of events including dance concerts, symphony orchestras, campus wide -events and Broadway musicals. Depending on availability, the Robert B. Moore Theatre can be rented by community members for special events. This 886-seat renovated theatre was designed by the world-famous architect, Richard Neutra, and serves as the performance home for OCC Dance and OCC Music as well as several community dance and music schools while the Drama Lab performance venue is dedicated solely to the Theater Arts instructional program.
Summary Under general supervision - assists with a variety of technical duties involved in set construction, set-up, rigging, and striking of scenery and props; preparation, installation, set-up, operation, and striking of lighting and sound equipment or wardrobe and costume preparation for main stage performances and theater productions.
Distinguishing Career Features The Theater Technical Assistant is the entry level position into a career path focused on working and supporting theater and specialized productions. Advancement to the next level would lead to the Theater Technical Specialist. The Theater Technical Specialist requires compliance with the stated qualifications, the ability to perform demonstrations, construct and integrate theater sets, lighting, special effects, and the support of coursework and productions. The Theater Technical Specialist combines instruction in and delivery of technical aspects of theater production such as sets, lighting, sound, and special effects. The Specialist is part of a career path for instructional, laboratory, and event production support.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities Specific duties may vary among departments, divisions and jobs. Incumbents typically perform a substantial portion or all of the following types of duties, as assigned:
1. Carry, lift, build, and strike scenery, prop, lighting and sound projects; collaborate with other personnel and students in various activities to meet theatre production needs in a safe, timely and cost-effective manner; review completed projects for compliance with established standards, requirements and specifications.
2. Prepare, hang, hook up and operate lights and other lighting equipment; install, hang and rig scenery, props, booms, ropes, drapes and other materials; set up and operate sound equipment and assure proper connection, volume, mixing and amplification; reinforce sound for theatre programs.
3. Under the oversight of the Theater Technical Specialist, participates in the shaping and forming of various scenery and prop components utilizing appropriate saws, lathes, shapers and other equipment; assemble scenery and prop components utilizing drills, screws, nails and bolts.
4. Operate a variety of production equipment such as mixing boards, lighting controls, projectors, special effects devices, cameras, amplifiers, speakers and sound player devices; operate a computer and assigned software.
5. Apply paints or other surface coatings to scenery and props; mix and match paints and finishes to blend, harmonize or contrast colors according to theatre production needs and specifications.
6. Perform minor maintenance and repairs on theatre facilities and lighting, sound, stage and rigging equipment; identify needs, report, and provide technical input concerning major equipment purchases and replacements.
7. May assist with the build, preparation, and repair of costumes for theatre and dance productions; sew and mend costumes as needed. Sort out costume items for the storage and ensure organized maintenance of costume spaces.
8. Operate a variety of equipment such as drills, saws, lifts, sanders, computerized lighting and sound controls, and various hand and power tools.
9. Communicate with District personnel, students, various outside agencies and the public to exchange information and resolve issues or concerns; work with stage managers and assistants in meeting technical theatre needs.
10. Monitor inventory and identify needs for adequate levels of supplies and equipment; initiate and process orders and requisitions for new equipment, supplies, replacements and repairs.
11. Maintain theatre buildings and facilities in a safe, sanitary, clean and orderly condition; assist in assuring a safe environment for students, staff and the public; assure compliance with safety standard in the operation of the theatre and related equipment.
12. Prepare and maintain various records and reports related to facility use, theatre productions and assigned activities; participate in the development, update and maintenance of the event schedules and calendars.
13. Performs other related duties as assigned that support the objective of the position.
14. Required to abide by all District policies and procedures including Board Policy 3050 - Code of Professional Ethics.

Qualifications Knowledge and Skills 1. Requires knowledge of methods, practices, procedures, materials and equipment involved in the construction, alteration, forming, painting, finishing and set-up of scenery and props used in theatre stage productions. 2. Requires knowledge practices, procedures and techniques involved in the preparation, installation, set-up and operation of theatre production lighting and sound equipment systems. 3. Requires knowledge of methods of theatrical stagecraft, types, and uses of scenery, props, costumes, sound systems, and lighting. 4. Requires understanding of and ability to read drawings and specifications for theatre productions including scenery, sound, and lighting design. 5. Requires knowledge of operation and use of a variety of audio-visual equipment and hand and power tools and equipment. 6. Requires knowledge of appropriate safety precautions and procedures. 7. Requires general knowledge of carpentry, painting and other skills required in set construction. 8. Requires general math skills; including arithmetic calculations. 9. Requires sufficient written communication skills to perform basic record keeping and report preparation techniques. 10. Requires sufficient interpersonal skills to interact and communicate with others using tact, patience, courtesy, and professionalism.
Abilities 1. Requires the ability to perform the essential responsibilities and functions of the position. 2. Requires the ability to perform a variety of technical duties involved in the construction, set-up and rigging of scenery and props, and preparation, installation, set-up and operation of lighting and sound equipment and systems for theatre productions. 3. Requires the ability to shape, form, assemble, paint and install various scenery and prop components utilizing appropriate materials and equipment. 4. Requires the ability to review and follow technical drawings and specifications for theatre productions including scenery, sound and lighting design as well as develop and implement scenery, prop, lighting and sound projects. 5. Requires the ability to prepare, hang, hook up, focus, adjust and operate lighting equipment. 6. Requires the ability to hang and rig scenery and other flying units. 7. Requires the ability to set up and operate sound equipment and assure proper volume, mixing and amplification. 8. Requires the ability to prepare cost estimates and assist in determining material, equipment, time and labor requirements as well as prepare and maintain a variety of lists, records, and reports. 9. Requires the ability to operate a variety of audio-visual equipment and hand and power tools and equipment. 10. Requires the ability to operate a computer and assigned software. 11. Requires the ability to meet schedules, timelines, and work independently with minimal direction.
Physical Abilities 1. The general physical demands, working conditions, and essential job functions associated with this classification will be kept on file with the Office of Human Resources. 2. Education and Experience The position requires two (2) years of college level coursework in a theater-related discipline and three (3) years of related experience, which may be concurrent, providing technical support to theater productions. Or, any combination of education and experience which would provide the required equivalent qualifications for the position.
Licenses and Certificates Requires a valid driver license.
Working Conditions Work is performed indoors where safety considerations exist from physical labor and working with electricity and power tools.

Note: Applicants must be authorized to work for ANY employer in the U.S. We are unable to sponsor or take over sponsorship of an employment Visa at this time. This is a permanent, general funded, full-time, 12-months per year classified position. The normal hours of work will be Wednesday through Sunday 12:00 pm to 9:00 pm, with the flexibility to adjustments on working hours, if necessary, to meet the department's needs. The effective date of employment will be arranged with the supervisor. The District provides medical, dental, and vision insurance for the employee and eligible dependents and life insurance for the employee. (Salary Schedule: EE-116 + 13% Fluctuating Weekend Swing Shift Differential)

Pay Philosophy:
Coast Community College District, through policies, practices, and other benefit programs, delivers a fair and equitable total compensation program that promotes equal employment opportunity, inclusion, and workforce vitality. All movement on the salary schedule will occur July 1 of each year for all classified employees.

Selection Procedure
