Job Summary

This role is a 25% contract role for 1-2 months with the potential for extension

Independently oversees a comprehensive communications program for a unit or school with moderately complex communications requirements. The communications program usually includes written, visual, digital and electronic communications. Works with management to develop and execute organizational communication and market branding strategy. Designs and implements information campaigns.

The primary responsibility of the Communications Specialist is to implement and execute against the Department of Urology's marketing communications strategy as defined by Department of Urology leadership. Working under the supervision of the Department Chair, this individual:

  • Creates, executes, and evaluates a communications plan that is aligned with Department of Urology's strategic goals.
  • Creates coordinated organization-wide and project/program-based marketing communications collateral.
  • Writes and edits content that promote Urology's point of view in the marketplace and communicates Urology's contributions to department newsletters and university-wide communications.
  • Executes Urology's strategy for communicating to external audiences.
  • Increased time for Chair communications
  • Social Media strategy

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $87,200 - $130,800 (Annual Rate).

UROLOGY
For the past several years, UCSF Urology has ranked #1 in National Institutes of Health (NIH) funding for biomedical research, among urology departments nationwide. The UCSF Dept. of Urology is ranked in the top 4 by US News and World Report, for "best hospitals for urology". The Department of Urology in the School of Medicine (SOM) educates medical students, residents, and clinical and postdoctoral fellows in urology; conducts basic science, clinical, and epidemiological research, including clinical trials; and provides professional patient care services. The Department conducts its teaching, research, and patient care activities at five major sites: the Parnassus campus, Mission Bay, Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital (ZSFGH), the San Francisco Veterans Administration Medical Center (SFVAMC), and the UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital Oakland.

Required Qualifications


  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
  • Minimum 3 years of related experience
  • Knowledge of location protocols and channels for communication internally and externally.
  • Solid written, verbal, interpersonal communications, active listening and political acumen skills.
  • Knowledge and skills to advise and consult with management to ensure delivery of the desired message to the target and / or broad general audiences.
  • Solid skills to create, develop, and implement comprehensive long and short term strategic communications plans.
  • Knowledge of the organization, its achievements, mission, vision, goals, policies, practices, infrastructure, and a strong knowledge of current affairs, and issues in higher education and / or health sciences.
  • Knowledge and understanding of technical applications to effectively direct technical staff, or personally perform technical work, including design concepts, various media, and applications.
  • Knowledge of all aspects of communications, including strategic planning for various media venues, technical aspects and requirements of various venues, and most appropriate and effective applications.
