PRIMARY FUNCTIONS
This is highly responsible technical or specialized work. Work involves supervisory responsibility for the operation and maintenance of an assigned police service unit or operation. Work is performed under the general supervision of a Police Captain, Assistant Chief of Police and/or Chief of Police and is reviewed through the conferences, reports, and evaluation of results.

TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Supervises the operation of any department function or operational unit as defined by the organizational chart.
  • Serves as Assistant Shift Commander or Shift Commander as required within the Patrol Unit.
  • Represents the Department at meetings, either community or governmental.
  • May perform the duties of a police officer or detective with respect to the investigation of criminal behavior.
  • Performs related work as required.


EDUCATION, QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE

  • Graduation from an accredited high school supplemented by formal training in police science
  • Completion of 4 years as a police officer and 3 years in grade as a sergeant in the New Haven Police Department at the time of application


KNOWLEDGE, EXPERIENCE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

  • Thorough knowledge of the rules and regulations of the department.
  • Considerable knowledge of the geography of the city.
  • Considerable knowledge of modern police practices and methods.
  • Ability to plan, assign and supervise the work of subordinates officers and others.
  • Ability to deal firmly and courteously with people while respecting their rights and exercising considerable discretion.
  • Ability to analyze situations quickly and objectively, and to determine proper courses of action to be taken.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with fellow employees and the public.


NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Candidates for this classification must possess and maintain throughout their course of employment established physical, medical and psychological requirements. The physical, medical and psychological requirements for this classification are the same as for any classification of employee holding arrest powers.
  • Possess and maintain a valid Connecticut Drivers License.
  • Maintain certification as established by the Police Officer Standards and Training Council.


SALARY, BARGAINING UNIT & TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT
This position is included in a collective bargaining agreement with Elm City Local of the CT Alliance of City Police, formerly Local 530, Council 15, American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, AFL-CIO. Bargaining agreements available to review HERE.

General Funded hires into this class are not covered by Social Security and will not pay Social Security taxes. They instead participate in the City Pension; the employee contribution rate is 12% of pay.

Selection Plan

Applicants meeting minimum requirements will be invited to participate in a Civil Service exam process at a later date. Applicants must demonstrate that they meet the minimum requirements as listed within the job description; failure to do so may result in disqualification.
