Our lab is based in both the Departments of Emergency Medicine and Informatics at UCI. The work bridges together researchers across University of California campuses to study how social data from social media, wearable devices, and online technologies can be used to predict real-world events in areas like health and medicine, politics, crime, education, and finance. While our work is broadly focused, most of our day-to-day work is focused on health and medicine.

We offer patient-centered care, apply cutting edge skills to combat serious illness and injury. In addition, our physicians conduct innovative research aimed at preventing injury and disease.


Your Role on the Team

Under the direction of the Principal Investigator, the SRA 3 will be responsible for day-to-day operations of assigned research projects, community outreach/dissemination, and writing briefs related to research. The candidate will oversee applying best practices in social media marketing to use technologies to recruit participants to studies and research websites, including new technologies for gaining followers/engagement with our work. The candidate will stay informed about emerging technologies, best practices and policies, and develop ideas for adapting studies. The candidate will work with lab staff and students to further the research goals of the Institute. The candidate will organize and monitor research activities including running project meetings, monitor students and volunteers, and maintain study files. Develop recruitment and follow-up protocols and flowcharts. Ensure timelines are met. Conduct community outreach efforts. The SRA 3 will also conduct statistical analyses on the current and future research projects, and write up the research results into manuscripts, briefs, and grant applications.

The ideal candidate will be extremely organized and detail-oriented. Must have a minimum of a Bachelor's Degree and greater than 4 years of research and/or work experience with technologies such as social media to run online advertisements and gain website traffic and followers. Demonstrated knowledge and skill in current and emerging internet and social media platforms, digital marketing, as well as analytics and understanding data related to how people use technologies.

To successfully address these tasks on time, the SRA 3 must have a broad set of intelligence, be extremely diligent and task-oriented, and an efficient worker who is comfortable with rigid project deadlines. Excellent writing skills required.


What It Takes to be Successful

Required:

  • Familiarity with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA) to ensure confidentiality, privacy and security of patient information.
  • Experience working and communicating with sensitive populations, such as substance use and/or with HIV-infected populations.
  • Willingness and proven ability to maintain confidentiality of subjects.
  • Skill in communicating with others about sensitive behavioral issues, including drug use and criminal behavior, and frequency of high-risk behaviors. Skill in speaking and writing to persons of various social, cultural, economic, and educational backgrounds.
  • Strong decision-making skills and ability to use independent judgment and discretion to quickly set priorities and establish new procedures when needed.
  • Experience reviewing project-specific experimental procedures and data for use in manuscripts, grants and presentations.
  • Demonstrated ability to consult with PI and Co-PI's and act as point of contact to coordinate large teams.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships while successfully managing multiple studies.
  • Demonstrated ability to train, supervise, and monitor progress/evaluate the associated personnel in research procedures and data collection.
  • Ability to communicate effectively about task deadlines and meet deadlines with frequent interruptions and changing priorities.
  • Ability to take the initiative and independently respond to requests in writing, in person, or over telephone.
  • Organizational skills to maintain records and coordinate other tasks as required, requiring a high level of accuracy and meticulous attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated ability to research, analyze, recommend, communicate, and implement solutions.
  • Skilled in keeping accurate and timely records.
  • Willingness to be flexible and independently manage schedule to work occasional evenings and weekends as required by study needs.
  • Ability to multi-task, prioritize, and manage competing demands/assignments/deadlines to ensure tasks are completed on or before due dates/timeline.
  • Ability to be punctual and maintain a satisfactory attendance record.
  • Ability to work independently and report to Principal Investigator on a regular basis and in a timely manner.
  • Proficient writing skills to prepare/compose/review a variety of materials with accuracy and completeness.
  • Demonstrated ability to create research protocols for recruitment and follow up efforts.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, verbally, and in writing, with subjects, staff, and supervisors.
  • Knowledge of Surveymonkey, Qualtrics, RED Cap, Google Analytics, Wordpress, Dashboard, podcasting equipment and software, Canva, Microsoft Analytics, Outlook, Word, Excel, digital marketing tools and technologies (including artificial intelligence tools), and PowerPoint.
  • Ability to understand data analysis and data analytics, and prepare data and budget reports.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of personal computers and relevant software programs (e.g., data entry, word processing, spreadsheets, Wordpress, design software).
  • Stays up-to-date weekly digital marketing best practices.
  • Ability to keep up-to-date with best practices in design and charts/tables for conveying research updates.
  • Experience using technology ads and cutting-edge methods to gain website visitors.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and skill in the use of social media platforms for recruitment and outreach/dissemination.
  • Ability to carefully and accurately proofread own and other's materials.
  • Ability to creatively solve technology problems and otherwise be resourceful.
  • Demonstrated leadership through sharing of blogs about technology/social media marketing blogs, podcasts, data visualization templates, and study material templates with research team.
  • Comfortable using personal social media and platforms to further research goals, including sharing research updates on personal social media accounts to increase dissemination
  • Ensures projects meet targets.
  • At least four years of research experience carrying out behavioral interventions.

Preferred:

  • Bilingual Spanish (read, write, and speak).
