Our lab is based in both the Departments of Emergency Medicine and Informatics at UCI. The work bridges together researchers across University of California campuses to study how social data from social media, wearable devices, and online technologies can be used to predict real-world events in areas like health and medicine, politics, crime, education, and finance. While our work is broadly focused, most of our day-to-day work is focused on health and medicine.

UCI's Department of Emergency Medicine is committed to advancing clinical care, education and research to help patients with diverse emergency conditions. Your Role on the Team

Under the direction of the Principal Investigator, the Staff Research Associate (SRA) will be responsible for day-to-day operations of assigned data analysis for research projects and writing briefs related to research. The candidate will need to have experience using computer science/data science/machine learning models and can ensure timelines are met. The person will conduct statistical analyses on the current and future research projects, and write up the research results into manuscripts, briefs, and grant applications.

The ideal candidate will be extremely motivated, organized and detail-oriented. Must have a minimum of a bachelor's degree and greater than 2 years of data science research and/or work experience. Demonstrated knowledge and skill in current and emerging internet and social media platforms.

To successfully address these tasks on time, the SRA must have a broad set of intelligence, be extremely diligent and task-oriented, and an efficient worker. Excellent writing skills required.

The SRA will be trained and supervised by the Principal Investigator, with the ultimate goal of greater independence once the SRA has demonstrated the ability to carry out the PI plans.


What It Takes to be Successful

Required:

  • Proficiency in hypothesis testing, including no mistakes in use of t-tests, regressions, anova, mixed effects modeling, chi-square, and other common tests.
  • Proficiency in writing the methods and results sections of peer-reviewed scientific manuscripts, including using proper grammar and syntax.
  • Proficiency in artificial intelligence modeling
  • Proficiency in cleaning and organizing data
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, verbally, and in writing, with faculty, staff, and supervisors
  • Ability to communicate effectively about task deadlines and ability to complete on time while managing competing demands / assignments / deadlines. Excellent organizational skills to maintain accurate records and coordinate other tasks as required
  • Experience working and communicating with sensitive populations, such as substance use and/or with HIV-infected populations
  • Willingness and proven ability to maintain confidentiality of subjects
  • Skill in communicating with others about sensitive behavioral issues, including drug use and criminal behavior, and frequency of high-risk behaviors. Skill in speaking and writing to persons of various social, cultural, economic, and educational backgrounds
  • Demonstrated ability to develop, organize, track projects, and coordinate complex activities requiring a high level of accuracy and meticulous attention to detail
  • Knowledge of Surveymonkey, Qualtrics, RED Cap, Google Analytics, Wordpress, Dashboard, Canva, Microsoft Analytics, Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Ability to work independently and report to Principal Investigator on a regular basis and in a timely manner within a deadline-driven structure
  • Proficiency in safe management and storage or data, including HIPAA. Familiarity with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA) to ensure confidentiality, privacy, and security of patient information
  • Proficient writing skills to prepare/compose/review a variety of materials with accuracy and completeness
  • Demonstrated ability to manage a moderate volume of work efficiently and meet deadlines with frequent interruptions and changing priorities
  • Ability to understand data analysis and data analytics, and prepare data and budget reports
  • Demonstrated ability to train, supervise, and monitor progress/evaluate the associated personnel in research procedures and data collection
  • Possible weekend and evening hours
  • Greater than 2 years of data science research and/or work experience.

Preferred:

  • Ability to be punctual and maintain a satisfactory attendance record
  • Ability to creatively solve technology problems
  • Understanding of medical terminology
