Researcher I This position requires an active USAccess clearance or the ability to obtain a USAccess clearance to be considered. The Researcher I will support ecological research on benthic communities, coral ecosystems, and marine invertebrates. This position involves a mix of fieldwork, lab analysis, and data management to advance conservation and resource management goals. Compensation & Benefits: Estimated Starting Salary Range for Researcher I: Negotiable Pay commensurate with experience. Full time benefits include Medical, Dental, Vision, 401K, and other possible benefits as provided. Benefits are subject to change with or without notice. Researcher I Responsibilities Include:
- Field Surveys and Data Collection
- Conduct field surveys, sample collections, and marine invertebrate identification (Phyla and Class level).
- Collect sediment samples for benthic community analysis, environmental data, and tissues for stable isotope analysis.
- Assist in acquiring biological and environmental data in the field, including water and biological sample collection.
- Deploy sampling gear, install study plots, and retrieve data from sensors.
- Process sediment cores, water samples, and tissues in field settings.
- Collect and analyze benthic ecological samples using multiple techniques.
- Act as a vehicle and boat driver to support oceanographic data collection.
- Laboratory Work
- Process and sort sediments and perform basic identification of benthic infauna.
- Prepare and process samples for stable isotope analysis.
- Provide care for mesophotic and/or deep-sea corals and other fauna in saltwater aquaria systems.
- Perform data entry and quality assurance/quality control (QA/QC) of sediment community data.
- Monitor water chemistry and provide updates to inform husbandry efforts.
- Develop and manage sample processing priorities and ensure timely task completion.
- Conduct image annotation and data analysis from submersible assets.
- Prepare biological samples for shipment and further analysis (e.g., isotope, genetics).
- Utilize standard software programs (e.g., MS Office 365 suite, ArcGIS) to support project goals.
- Marine Operation Duties
- Assist in the preparation and mobilization of field equipment and boats, ensuring all mechanisms are safe and operational.
- Organize field equipment for coastal and offshore projects.
- Assist with sensor deployment, data logging, and documentation.
- Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
Researcher I Experience, Education, Skills, Abilities requested:
- Six to eight months of experience in biological and ecological science and research, including scientific data collection in the field (sometimes in remote locations).
- Experience working with state or federal resource agencies, nongovernmental conservation organizations, or universities is preferred.
- Familiarity with database interaction and maintenance of specialized data loggers.
- Undergraduate Degree in biological and ecological sciences or equivalent documented experience.
- Thorough knowledge of standard software programs (e.g., MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint) applicable to project goals.
- Ability to identify sediment fauna to at least the phyla level.
- Capability to work independently within established guidelines and operational procedures.
- Strong organizational skills to maintain sample processing priorities.
- Ability to work under supervision in the field and laboratory settings.
- Proven knowledge of sediment fauna identification and QA/QC standards.
- Familiarity with remote data collection and field sampling techniques.
- Physical ability to conduct fieldwork and handle marine sampling equipment.
- Must pass pre-employment qualifications of Cherokee Federal.
