Job Description:
- Prepares dialysate according to established procedures and patient's prescription.
- Obtains and documents pre-dialysis vital signs to include weight and temperature.
- Inspects patient's dialysis access and inserts needed and initiates dialysis according to unit protocol and patient prescription.
- Measures, calculates and adjusts blood flow rates according to established protocols and prescription.
- Administers anticoagulant according to unit protocols and prescription.
- Changes fluid removal rate and patient position and administers Normal Saline as directed by RN, ALP order or unit protocol.
- Monitors vital signs (temperature, pulse, etc.) and patient condition then documents observations appropriately.
- Documents patient treatment parameters and communicates patient's conditions and issues to RNs.
- Monitors patients and equipment, responds to alarms and readjusts treatment parameters as defined by established protocols and individual patient requirements.
- Responds appropriately to dialysis related emergencies such as hypotensive episodes, needle displacement or infiltration, clotting episodes, blood leaks, air eboli, etc., and initiates CPR in the event of a cardiac or respiratory arrest.
- Discontinues dialysis and establishes hemostasis following unit protocol and inspects, cleans, and dresses access according to unit protocol
- Obtains and records post dialysis vital signs, including weight and temperature.
- Verifies absence of residual sterilants.
- Takes fluid samples or other specimens for testing and prepares them for shipping.
- Discards dialysis supplies and sanitizes the equipment according to the manufacturer and unit protocols
- Communicates emotional, medical, psychosocial, and nutritional concerns to the RN or ALP when needed
- Under the direction of a registered nurse, monitors and documents the status of, and instructs patient in case of, vascular accesses, etc.
- Reinforces treatment care with the patient.
- Ensures patient has adequate patient care supplies and monitors inventories.
- Assists nursing staff in administering basic treatments (e.g., hemodialysis therapy, etc.).
- Maintains professional conduct, good communication skills and confidentiality in the care of the patients and participates in the multidisciplinary process
- Reviews lab work and physician orders.
- Performs basic clinical procedures (e.g., changing bandages).
- Readies the dialysis equipment before treatment and cares for the equipment after treatment.
- Tests monitors and machine functions, including alarms, conductivity and temperature.
- Sets monitors and alarms according to unit and manufacturer protocols.
- Completes flow sheets (via EMR) to verify patient billing.
- Complies with agency policies and procedures by state and federal regulations for patient care and services (CMS, HIPAA, OSHA, and other governing agencies)
- Participates in quality assurance and cost containment programs.
- Participates in individual and group projects as directed by management .
