Southampton Deckhand

Required Qualifications: (As evidenced by an attached resume)
High School diploma or GED (foreign equivalent or higher). Must have, keep and maintain the appropriate valid NYS Driver's License; have a motor vehicle record which is free from major violations or a pattern of repeat violations. (***Out-of-State Applicants, see "Special Notes").

Preferred Qualifications:
Experience operating and maintaining boats. Knowledge of local waters.

Brief Description of Duties:
The Deckhands serve in various capacities aboard a number of the smaller vessels in the SoMAS fleet operated out of either the Stony Brook or Southampton campuses in support of scientific research and educational programs. Examples of those capacities are: Operate deck gear in the deployment and retrieval of sampling gear, perform routine maintenance and minor repair to vessel and equipment, and assist science parties aboard vessels to carry out their mission safely and effectively. The work may include cruises away from home port and be multiple days of duration.

• Serve as Deckhand aboard small boat operations
  
  
  
  • Abide by all shipboard safety rules and procedures.
  • Operate deck gear in the deployment and retrieval of sampling gear.
  • Perform routine maintenance and minor repairs
  • Assist science party aboard vessel to carry out their mission safely and effectively.
  • Stand watch.
  • Serve as ship's cook as necessary.
  • Perform additional routine shipboard and shore-side duties as directed by vessel captain, fleet manager, or science party.
  • Perform additional routine shipboard and shore-side duties as directed by the vessel captain.
  • Assist with transportation/trailering of boats to/from launch sites.
  • Cleaning/organizing of deck and quarters as required.
  • Safely and humanely handling and sorting fish and other marine organisms.
  
  
  
  
• Other duties or projects as assigned as appropriate to rank and departmental mission.

Special Notes:
This is a part-time appointment. FLSA Non Exempt position, eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA.

Evening and weekend work will be required at times.
