Title: State School Nurse Consultant

$74,734.40 - $103,417.60 / Posted Thru: 1-21-2025

Location: 100% Remote - Must live and work in the state of Michigan.

Travel within Michigan required.

Purpose: This specialist in school nursing practice works with school districts, health organizations, and state agencies providing nursing leadership, consultation and technical assistance for school health services statewide to promote quality school nursing and school health policies, programs, and procedures that address the health needs of students.


Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Serves as liaison and resource expert in school nursing and school health services for local, regional, state and national school health care provider and policy setting groups.
  • Provides consultation and technical assistance to local school districts and health organizations operating school nursing programs.
  • Coordinates school health services program activities with public health, social services, environmental, educational agencies and other public and private entities.
  • Monitors, interprets, synthesizes and disseminates relevant information associated with changes in health and medical care, school nursing practice, legislative changes, and legal issues that impact schools.
  • Develops, interprets, updates and disseminates policies, standards, records and procedures to enhance comprehensive school health services programs.
  • Participates in state level public interagency/private partnerships to develop and coordinate school based or school linked school nursing and school health services.
  • Cultivates a better understanding and level of knowledge among educators, parents and the general public of the relationship between health status and a student's capacity to learn.
  • Provides an annual report of school health services in the state.
  • Explores reimbursement systems and other funding streams to support school nursing programs.
  • In collaboration with the MDE State School Nurse Consultant, responds to inquiries from MDHHS, MDE, parents/families, general public and school personnel related to school nursing and student health.
  • Always represent the best interests of MPHI and MDHHS.
  • All other duties as assigned.



Qualifications/Requirements:

Education: Master's degree in nursing, public health or related field required. Must be State of Michigan registered nurse (RN).

Experience: Minimum 3-5 years practical experience working as a school nurse. Experience proving consultation and technical assistance to local communities.

Important Skills and Characteristics: Evidence -based clinical knowledge and practice skills, strong instructional skills, knowledge of research process, knowledge of school-aged, adolescent, and young adult development and the field of school and adolescent health, public health, strong problem-solving and decision-making abilities, public speaking and interpersonal skills, demonstrated ability to work in a team environment, demonstrated leadership and organizational skills, self-directed, and strong verbal and written communication skills.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements: Job may require moderate physical effort including lifting materials and equipment of <50# and involves viewing a CRT or VDT screen 25% to 75% o f the time. Standard office environment. May require valid vehicle operator's license where needed to perform duties of the position. Frequent in-state travel and limited out-of-state travel required.



RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE WORK OF OTHERS: Lead workers act as project leaders predominantly and/or coordinate the work activities of others.

IMPACT ON PROJECTS, SERVICES AND OPERATIONS: This position has a direct impact on the quality of services provided by MPHI to MDHHS. The State School Nurse Consultant will improve policies, procedures, and training protocols related to ensuring the health and safety of the student population, pre-k through 12th grade. School nursing practices will improve with state level leadership. The number of students who are able to remain in school and learning will increase as a result of these improved practices and technical assistance. An increase in the number and quality of school health related policies, practices and protocols will occur across the state in both schools with nurses and schools without nurses.
