Job Summary

Restaurant Associates is seeking an Executive Chef to lead a culinary team of 13 at the Smithsonian National Museum of American History in Washington, DC. This unique role offers the chance to craft imaginative menus that reflect American history and complement the museum's current exhibits and installations. The Executive Chef will drive kitchen operations, blending creativity with culinary excellence to deliver memorable dining experiences in a setting rich with culture and heritage.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and design innovative menus inspired by American history and rotating exhibits, aligning with established guidelines.
  • Ensure standardized recipes, portioning, and presentation reflect creative flair and historical relevance, while completing daily production records and waste logs.
  • Lead and inspire kitchen staff through training in food preparation, safe handling, equipment use, and sanitation, maintaining high culinary and safety standards.
  • Oversee equipment, storage, and work areas with regular cleaning and maintenance schedules.
  • Manage food and supply inventory to ensure availability, staying within budget without compromising quality or creativity.
  • Make thoughtful decisions regarding the use of surplus food, adhering to company policies.
  • Maintain strict compliance with health regulations and sanitation procedures at federal, state, and local levels.
  • Champion safety policies and procedures across the facility, department, and company.
  • Engage in team meetings, staff development, and professional growth opportunities to foster innovation and collaboration.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Associate degree or equivalent experience.
  • Minimum of 5 years of progressive culinary or kitchen management experience.
  • Strong background in catering, with experience developing themed or event-specific menus.
  • Proven ability to manage high-volume, complex foodservice operations.
  • Experience with institutional and batch cooking.
  • Hands-on chef experience with a passion for storytelling through food.
  • Deep knowledge of food and catering trends, with a focus on creativity, quality, and cost control.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), Outlook, and internet applications.
  • Interest in participating in guest engagement initiatives and curating unique dining experiences.
  • ServSafe certification is highly preferred.
