Overview
GEAR UP Utah College Access Advisor

This is a part-time position. Total hours are 10-15 hours per week working primarily 8-3pm per day at Ridgeline High School and Mountain Crest High School. So, the hours each week will be split between the two schools. There will be occasional times you will work outside of your assigned work hours for family events/ field trips but overall, 90% of the hours are spent at your assigned school, and only 10% at outside locations.

**The rate of pay is set at $15.50 per hour. The official start date will be determined at time of hire, no later than January 6, 2025. The end date of the position will be June 1, 2025, unless otherwise discussed at time of hire.

Advisors give support to students in order to be successful in high school and progress towards graduation and attending college. This includes weekly/bi-weekly individual mentor meetings, field trips, tutoring, and scholarship/FAFSA help. Success is more than just grades, and the mentoring side of this job is vital to this position. As an advisor, you are expected to consistently meet with each student to discuss their progress in terms of school which includes: grades, attendance, career exploration, etc.

About GEAR UP:

GEAR UP (Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs) is a federally funded grant program. Its goal is to increase college awareness for low-income students and their families and to help students develop the skills and preparation necessary to pursue education after high school. GEAR UP works collaboratively with schools, parents and community organizations to help students build the knowledge, skills and confidence needed to prepare for college. GEAR UP provides staff and funding resources in a comprehensive program that:
  • Helps students with academic, social and life skills
  • Documents, tracks, and reports on student data to data specialists
  • Reaches out to parents with college knowledge and awareness information
  • Builds partnerships within the school community

ACA Variable Hours.
US Work Authorization is required.

Responsibilities
  • Create and maintain active working relationships within the school with the counseling, administration, and UCAC teams.
  • Meet one-on-one with the program director to establish goals and maintain relationships with school partnerships once a month.
  • Assist in one-on-one mentoring, tutoring, career exploration, helping school counselors, and FAFSA and Scholarship applications.
  • Documenting information such as what is discussed with students and tracking how often you meet with them.
  • Workshops, family events, and community events set up, clean up, and planning.


Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Experience working with teenagers in an academic setting and/or experience providing mentoring/advising services
  • Associates Degree or Current College Student
  • MUST be proficient in Microsoft Suites (Excel, Word, PowerPoint)
  • Friendly and personable with a positive attitude
  • Strong interpersonal skills, especially in working within a team environment
  • This includes team environments within the schools and within the district as a whole
  • Must have access to a reliable transportation to perform essential job functions
  • Must be available during school hours (8-3pm, though the schedule within those hours is flexible).

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Someone who will commit to the full school year (August-May)
  • Someone who has been a previous GEAR UP student or GEAR UP Advisor in another region
  • Someone who majored (or is currently studying) in: psychology, social work, counseling, educational advising
  • Spanish-speaking
